Tom Renney Quotes (198 Quotes)

If you don't come out the gate well you stumble. Then you have to try and make up ground against good teams.

This lineup tonight could be symbolic of what it might take down the road here and in the playoffs. We hope the team understands the value of that and works harder to play that way than maybe they have the last half dozen games.

Somebody's looking after us. It's time we looked after ourselves. We can do it here. That should be the ultimate objective. It's all about (tonight) there's no other focus, no distractions.

I'm leaning toward Henrik, but we'll see. Those are my intentions at this time.

He's a proud guy and a professional. To be honest with you, I'm not so sure the game off was the difference. We could have had a chat about it, and I think he would have come out and done everything he could to be the same player he was Wednesday. I thought he responded real well.

They're legitimate aches and pains that you've got to pay attention to. When an athlete can't go, you've got to listen to that.

It is important to experience everything that you might see in the playoffs. But having said that, we have to make sure that we don't assume anything... And if we play the way we did tonight, it's going to be a tougher road ahead of us than we think.

We believe he can help our power play. We believe we've helped our offensive attack and our transition game.

We've earned the privilege of feeling good about what we've done. But we have won nothing. We know we need our A-plus game in the playoffs, and now is the time that you make sure you're there when the time comes.

When you look at the third- and fourth-line guys, in a lot of ways they define what you want to take pride in and what we believe this city will appreciate, too. Flat out hard work, good honest work, (and) trust and care in each other.

Wednesday will be the tougher day. If they get through that they'll probably be OK for Thursday's game. We might have to make some tough decisions.

I'm thinking I'd better not make an emotional comment. I'll just sit down and think it through and do what's appropriate.

We really can't afford to look past the next 20 minutes of hockey. There are some neat things building between the Devils and ourselves and we're happy about that for everybody concerned.

The Devils have been playing playoff hockey for a while. It's a real good opportunity for us to pay attention to how you can turn a season around, and you can do that in one game. And with that in mind, game on.

No, black-and-white wouldn't go across too well Jeez, a guy from Cranbrook British Columbia, I forgot all about baseball.

I'll wait and see. I'll make a determination today during the day at some point in time.

This is our team, injuries are part of the game and we'll press on regardless of who's in and who's out, but we believe and hope Jagr is fine. It was a big collision, but he's a big man, a strong guy, and I think he came out of it all right.

He said he felt a little tight. By the time I left the ice, I wasn't aware there was much of a problem. But certainly talking to (trainer) Jim Ramsey afterwards he felt very uncomfortable.

It may affect our transition game. He's got really good poise with the puck, he's got good deception where he can look people off and then make the appropriate little outlet pass. Those are real critical to our transition game and how much time we spend in our own end.

Maybe we got too full of ourselves after the last game, figuring we'd arrived. It's not about arriving. It's about working to get somewhere. And we didn't work tonight - not nearly as hard as we have to.

The bottom line is we cannot give New Jersey anything and we have to try and manufacture something.

It's improving. It's encouraging, after today at least, it seemed like he had some good treatment.

I don't think so. I've asked myself the same question. We've really been careful in how we schedule our days off. Many of those are kind of spontaneous decisions to cut out a practice here or a morning skate. I think we've done the right things. I think one of the reasons we've been relatively injury-free is because of our general team fitness.

Let's be honest about this hockey club, gang These guys have gone above and beyond the call of duty from Day One. One thing we can proudly do is defend this team's good intentions, their work habits and their desire to win.

We have to get Kevin going, get him rolling. I wouldn't mind giving him a chance to go back and play the Islanders. He had a tough game the last time he was there.

Obviously we're having difficulty in our penalty kill, and he has done a decent job of it when he's been out there. It was a chance to practice it because, looking ahead, it's obvious that we're going to be killing penalties.

We need some pop. Going into Philly (tomorrow) ... we want him to get some realistic work.

Kevin was fine. I thought it was more an opportunity to wake up 18 guys and get ourselves back in the hockey game by doing what we have to do in terms of managing the puck, and maybe give yourself to play 5-on-5 hockey or better.

The guys really understood the game plan. We worked with them all night long. We kept them to the outside they didn't get a lot of second chances.

We have to draw some conclusions form this game and how to manage the puck. You can learn an awful lot by looking at a loss. This happens.

Time will tell, but he's a good player. It's not like this guy came out of absolutely nowhere for us.

It hurt us from that point of view. We had our practice all ready to go as we always do, but specifically for Pittsburgh.

As long as we're working hard and playing within our system we should be able to get scoring chances with him out there at less than 100 percent. But we're going to be really very, very careful here and make sure that we give him a chance to assess where he is, both psychologically and physically, before we even contemplate putting him back in.

We had a good transition game and passed the puck up quickly. We got the puck behind people and deep. The best way to beat the trap is not let it set up.

We don't want to be too proactive getting him back into the lineup. We have to listen to his body.

I'm not sure we competed as hard as we needed to for the first 40 minutes. Then the third period was all a penalty kill. There's not a lot to like about the game, honestly.

There's no benefit-of-a-doubt stuff in the playoffs. You're in the big parade now and you have to participate. If we give ourselves a chance to play five-on-five hockey, then who knows

This is all about winning here. No one knows that better than Kevin Weekes. He's made it easy on me ... Kevin will be ready to play, then we'll move on and get our wins with him, too.

You want to do better than that. You want to answer the bell. We did have a strong game against New Jersey. But so what That one's over.

Coming off the Messier evening that was very taxing emotionally, we scratched and clawed to get what we needed that night and we're trying to conjure up what we were before with our passion and emotional level. In the meantime, we haven't played particula

In the nature of the game, things have a way of balancing out. We've got some pretty good shooters, we've got guys who can score in the shootouts. That's just the way it goes. I think we have to be real careful we don't analyze ourselves to a standstill.

It was time to circle the wagons and clearly explain to the guys that we need to be better and we've got to commit ourselves to what we have been about in the past if we want to do anything with the future. And I'm talking about (tomorrow). We want to make sure we win that game, and to do it, we have to be a much better hockey club than we were tonight.

To beat a very good hockey team, the Stanley Cup champions, was important. And we did it because we hung in there and we stuck to our plan and, in the end, we found a way to win.

(Without Jagr) it probably gave our opponents some confidence at least.

Some teams aren't sure they can win. Some teams hope they can win, and some teams know, not just that they can win, but that they're going to win. I'm not sure we're there yet, but we really believe that every night we do give ourselves a real good shot at winning the game. That's part of the evolution. I'd like to get to the point where we know we can win.

You can teach those tactics but I don't know if his spirit will allow him. Let's hope he can figure it out before something really unfortunate happens.

I thought they scored some pretty good goals . If you can't see it, you can't stop it.

It was a good goaltender battle. Both goalies made exceptional saves.

Get your nose dirtier. There is a price to be paid for hanging in there and getting opportunities.

He has a pretty good history there.
