Tom Renney Quotes (198 Quotes)

If he can elevate to the point where we have no choice, then it's possible. If he comes in and does an admirable job, then probably not.

I didn't think we were real sharp, real crisp (early in the game), and if we weren't careful, we might have beaten ourselves tonight. But we did hang in there and we did pay attention to details that can win you games and ultimately got ourselves a nice lead.

I thought we would probably do Henrik well by giving him a breather before he went over to Europe, so it serves two purposes.

It's 82 games. Sometimes it might not click as quickly or as well as you want it to, or sometimes not at all. For our team, we've clicked more than we haven't . . .

That's the best version of 'Sweet Caroline' I've ever heard in a hockey rink.

There might be a minor sense of relief there for the players. They've certainly been on a mission all year long to acquire this playoff spot. It might even free us up to begin to turn the corner and play like we had been playing for the most part of this year. I think we're a little tight.

Our intention is that every time we go on the ice we have a purpose, and there is a level of performance that is acceptable and one that isn't. Sometimes we help them understand what acceptable is. Today was no problem. They worked hard.

You've got to have a minimum of two options every time with the puck. If those options are gone by poor positioning by your teammates, you're in a pickle so you try to do things that just don't exist. We made some bad choices, not just him.

We're going to stay the course and keep working at it. We had a game as we have had a couple of other times. We don't want to make it bigger than what it is.

I think that what's happening now is that this side of the pond is starting to realize exactly how good this young fellow is. Certainly in Europe and those of us who have had experience over there sort of saw this coming not to this degree, I'm not going to take credit for that. But certainly people are starting to realize this guy's for real.

We had a very professional conversation. It was not any kind of confrontation, it was just sharing thoughts.

We shot the puck a lot and I appreciate that and I wish others would shoot more. I think on the power play we could shoot the puck much more.

They're well aware of that reputation. They're aware of it and their objective is to prove people wrong.

A quicker release. Don't look for the second option take the first option. Often times, we want to set somebody up on the one-timer or get it to an open player, and that falls apart on you. I don't think with Marty, you can kind of point the puck at the net and score. You've just got to get it there and be there.

You can pick all sorts of reasons out why we're doing all right this year and I can tell you Kevin Weekes has really contributed to that whole thing by the nature of how he's chosen to deal with the situation.

He wants to play and he feels responsible for this team and where it's going. He wants to be the guy that leads them.

We wanted to make sure we could at least show New .Jersey that we had some depth on our PK. You roll the dice in those kinds of situations. He went beyond what I expected, but it shows he's a competitive person. I have no regrets on it. It's a decision I'll live with, though.

I'm not sure they wait for him to do magical things but they are sort of watching history here, too.

We humiliated ourselves here today. We embarrassed ourselves. That's probably the bottom line, I don't think I have to say that much about it.

Don said he had done it a certain way and that it was illegal. The horse is out of the barn. It's gone, it's over. Other than to raise the question of how in fact the sticks are measured and training staffs across the league measure sticks the same way. You need some type of quick seminar.

Our power play got us a couple of big ones and our PK did what it had to do. Keep the puck to the outside. They work very, very hard.

Obviously the penalty parade would suggest I'm not completely happy at all, nor should (the players) be. There's no benefit of the doubt in the playoffs. You're in the big parade now and you've got to participate. It becomes obviously clear we're incapable of dealing with the pressure of these types of situations well enough to stay out of the penalty box and give ourselves a chance.

I don't think that we pressured well in our own end. I thought we made poor decisions on our penalty kill as to when to jump and when not to jump in and pressure the puck carrier.

I wouldn't say real bad. But it is uncomfortable enough where it would be day-to-day. And whether he plays would be just that, a day-to-day situation. ... He's a little uncomfortable and there's pain.

Jaromir wanted to make sure he was at least showing New Jersey we have some depth in our penalty killing. We rolled the dice. He went beyond what I expected. It shows he is a competitive person. I have no regrets. That's a decision I'll live with though and that's my responsibility.

It'll be helpful to get to know ... can he run the table Can he play a seven-game series Does he play when he's absolutely on the beam or does he press too much to where he's less than the sum of his parts

I hope we're developing a reputation as a team that's tough to beat, whether at home or on the road. I hope that we're being identified as a team that plays a responsible game without the puck, that we are solid from the goaltender out.

I'm not sure of the extent as of yet, but we'll know a little more probably by late Saturday night.

They take good point shots, create traffic at the net and they're hard people to move. Whoever wins the specialty-team game should win the game tonight.

I'd like to watch this over again to see if what I saw was real.

Often times, it takes more than one person to check him. You have one person on the body and the other person on the puck. If you try to play him one-on-one, he'll eat you up.

I wanted to get a checking line out against the Scott Gomez line. I thought that if I could do that, we could probably play our first two lines and maybe manufacture some offense.

We felt the last 20 minutes could set the stage for the balance of the series.

Did we expect him to be on our No. 1 power-play unit at this stage of the season Maybe, but only as an interim thing or if we needed a spark or whatever. Certainly he's secured himself as an offensive player on our team.

Mission important and possible. It's a race to four games and they've only got three. As far as I'm concerned, we can certainly do that.

I don't know if we're a Stanley Cup contender right now but I think we can continue to surprise a lot of people by what we do these next 20 games and the playoffs.

We haven't played our best hockey the last couple weeks. Let's not kid ourselves.

I'm confident they'll play better. Just like I was confident we'd break a six-game losing streak and I'm confident we'll make the playoffs and I'm confident we'll do good things once we get there.

It's a game to build on. Maybe the first one was, too, but we were in a hole. In terms of execution, it was some minor things, but it was pretty good.

I thought he showed a lot of courage tonight. I thought he protected the puck as best he could and could make plays only he could make. He wasn't able to manufacture much offensively off the shot. He played to the best of his ability and it was important to have him in the lineup and in our dressing room.

I think we had players in our lineup play well, but I don't know if we've been able to put the whole thing together just yet. We've had periods in games where we've played well and looked like we had before the Olympic break when they had won six straight. At this point in time, we have yet to do that play a complete game.

This is every guy's dream and he's not finished with his. We appreciate that. And if he makes this battle that much more interesting, then all the power to him.

What I'm surprised at is that we choose to let ourselves get down a goal or two before we ignite ourselves in the way we need to play. And that's a heavy consequence when you're playing teams that really know how to play within their structure. I'll be surprised if it continues.

You try to generate some things that might be able to give you a push, I'm not sure we got it to the degree that we hoped to. Then again, we lost, so I guess that speaks volumes.

I'm not sure that we competed hard enough for the first 40 minutes, and the third period was just basically a penalty-kill period. There's not a lot to like about the game, quite honestly. But we'll go to school and correct ourselves.

They play a complete game and they have their identity that they've recaptured because it wasn't there for them in the first half of the season. Obviously, as they found theirs, we kind of lost ours.

I kind of forgot about him. He was at the other end of the bench. That's the real honest answer.

We really do have to get our heads around the way the game is being called. We're growing up in a hurry here, and we cannot afford to play hockey like we did tonight or our growth will be stunted in a real hurry.

They really care about where this team is going. They have an ear to the past and what's happened here, but they've also really assumed the responsibility for where this team is going to go - the effort we're trying to make to gain respect back from our fans and from the NHL.

He's clearly decided he's got to do what he's got to do in order for this team to get its playoff spot and that's foremost in his mind. We're all the beneficiary of that attitude.
