Joe Gibbs Quotes (234 Quotes)

We fought hard all day and kept slugging. I was proud of our guys because they've got great heart. They found a way to win the ballgame.

We're going to have to wait that out, ... But if I had to guess right now, I think it would make it tough for him to make it back for Monday night. We'll just have to work our way through that situation and see what's the best way of handling that.

Somebody's going to get a real opportunity to play for us. There still may be a solid guy there (in free agency now or after the June 1 cuts) that we feel like might come up, but that's something everybody is concerned about.

We'll take a long, hard look at everything. I'm excited about David being back and getting him healthy. We'll have a healthy James Thrash and we'll have Taylor Jacobs. Then we'll move forward and see what the best decision is that we can make in each one of those areas.

There are players there that you wished you could have on your squad. . . . I had some tough conversations today,

I like it that after that first Monday, it's all Sundays until the last Saturday, but I think they should have a rule that if you play on Monday night, you should get to play at home the next week.

It doesn't mean we're going to end camp -- it's the end of bed-check,

Each team's a little different, how they want to build a team. ... Certainly Pittsburgh is a scheme that works, they won a Super Bowl. If you watch their team, there are a lot of draft choices, they're real conscious about that. It remains to be seen how

We always want to get him in the game plan. We always want to get him the ball. Last week against Dallas, he only had three catches, but they were all big. He was one of the keys to us offensively and we try to work hard to get him the ball.

The scheme they had on defense for us was something quite a few people up here can play,

If he didn't have the calf situation, he would have practiced, ... He played extremely well. . . . The game was very physical and he got some hits. Quarterback-wise, the odds that we can go through the year like that and keep the guy healthy. . . . I hope we can keep him healthy.

I think it's a confidence thing, hopefully, ... and I think the guys believe. They know what you're capable off. Certainly, I think our play has stepped up as we've kind of gone here. Hopefully, it carries over. Last year was so hard for us. We couldn't get a big play like we've had in these games. We just couldn't get a big one when we had to have it.

All of our guys thought he was on the ground. That's what everybody told me. I didn't see it, but that's what instant replay is for.

We've had comments from people we've played -- that play was the one that really scared them. Teams blitz a lot, and if you catch that thing and there's one mistake by the defense, it's all over.

I thought the first part of the year, when he was healthy, I think that is about as good as I've seen anybody run.

People who enjoy what they are doing invariably do it well.

He's not a starter and hasn't started, ... I know he's disappointed in not making more of an impact, not playing more, but I think it's something we have to work our way through. I think it's one of those things scheme-wise for our defense, it's the best way I would answer that. We've got a lot of guys that are talented guys who can do a lot of things for us. ... Health-wise, I think he's back.

Carlos is better. His range of motion improved. He pushed it hard yesterday, but we'll just have to see.

A loss (Sunday) would have meant your back was against the wall and you're pretty much fighting week to week just to survive. To wind up 5-3, this puts you in a much better position. ... It gives you the feeling that you're fighting for it rather than trying to come off the floor.

Hey, ... please don't give away plays from our play book. 'Deep Throat,' that's one that owner Daniel Snyder drew up for me.

I thought Mark looked real good on Friday. But hopefully he'll be able to take more work this week. We'll need to start this game off absolutely sharp, playing against Tampa. They have one of the best defenses in the league.

You make sure you cover all the things we did poorly. Sometimes in a win like that, you have a tendency to say we played great, but you miss a lot of things that we did poorly. Penalties were definitely a problem. We turned the ball over. ... We've been riding a ragged edge. That's not good football. We've got to fix it. We've got to look at it as a great win, but there's things we need to improve upon.

There are different ways that people feel like it should be done. Any way that you can add a player -- I don't care if it's a trade, the draft, free agency -- I want to be aggressive. Free agency is a place where you make fewer mistakes because you're not trying to project somebody from a college environment to the pros. You've got somebody that has already played up here and been successful.

Coach Joe Gibbs said he believes the Redskins have ample playmakers among the wide receivers, although Taylor Jacobs and James Thrash have been silent as well. I think we've got other people. You're right. If it's just Santana, then we've got a problem because people can take one guy away, ... But I think we've got other receivers there, and hopefully they'll step up and do their part now.

That was the most congenial conversation I think I've ever had with anybody. What I was saying to him there was, 'I think you can help the football team' - that's when my finger came out. I said, 'Look, you can help this football team. You can rush the punter.' But I was also telling him, 'Now, this is what you need to do in order to do that.

So far this year at least, we have been turning the ball over and we have not been getting turnovers. That formula will kill you.

We're going to have to work our way through that, ... It's going to be a big topic of discussion. We've got Chris here with a short work week, so we've got to do a real good job of evaluating that.

We've got to look at it as a great win, ... But there's things we need to improve on.

For us it was just hard-fought, ... We fought hard all day and kept slugging. That's about all you can say from our side. I was proud of our guys, because they had great heart like that.

It was one of the greatest moments in sports for me.

What David is, is a very, very good route runner, ... He's showed that he's got patience. He's got really good hints, which normally means you're a real good route runner, when you can go in there and just have a natural way of selling something. All it is is a little hint, but you see the defender take a big bite off of it. He's got real good instincts that way, and he's been around a long time and is just one of the hardest-working, high-quality guys you want to be around.

You're always nervous about (losing Taylor). It would be real struggle for us (without him). I know what Sean says happened and what his group says happened. I think he is concerned about it and I think he felt like there is not much he can do about it now. He's kind of put it in other people's hands. You look a guy that big and that mature-looking and (you forget that) he's really young. He was real cooperative, much more open and friendly last year, and I think he had a heck of a year. I think he genuinely thought about (skipping the 2005 off-season workout program) and won't make some of those mistakes.

I think what you've got in the NFL is somebody busting their hump trying to make a block, and do you get in the wrong position trying to do something as hard as you can and as aggressive as you can Somehow there has to be that balance. 'Am I being smart' 'At what point do I let the guy go'

We're our own worst enemy, ... I don't like the way we're playing. We turn the ball over and commit penalties. We're making too many mistakes and need to play smart to win football games we're supposed to win. That's why we're here. To win.

I know this is something that I'm saying to every fan out there and every person that thinks the world of the Redskins and pulls for them, ... I know a lot of people will disagree with this, and I understand that. For me personally, I felt like it was a decision I had to make.

I feel humbled and really thankful the Lord's blessed us with a great bunch of guys. Any time you get into the playoffs, it's a huge deal. ... I don't know what to say about it, other than I'm just thrilled. It's hard to get into the playoffs.

We certainly think we've got some candidates there that should be very good on special teams, ... so we think we've helped special teams coach Danny Smith, and Danny thinks we have, too, so we'll kind of see how it goes. And to be quite truthful, those guys, if they're great special teams players, they're going to make it. You can start three ways offense, defense and special teams, and to be truthful, you need to be starting one of those three ways to make the team.

My heart is still with the offense. Al will probably be saying 'Shut up

All I want to do is win. I'll change anything about me, what I'm doing, the coaching staff . . . I don't care.

I feel good. Health-wise, I'm probably in better shape than I was a bunch of years before. Being a diabetic, I watch everything I eat. I feel great physically.

Joe Gibbs, the Redskins' coach and president, said last week that not re-signing Pierce was a mistake. I learned a lesson from it, ... And I don't intend to repeat it in the future. So, I would say that Antonio has our respect, certainly.

I will say this, we don't listen to him all the time or we'd be out here in our underwear.

He's young. He's got a heck of an arm. I think he's capable of making any throw you want him to make. One of the best learning tools a quarterback can have is watching somebody else.

We're all working hard to try to improve it in any way in the league and particularly officiating is a big deal, ... I think we've got very professional people there, and they work hard at it and we need to be a part of helping them and not working against them.

That'll be one of the first things that we address. I think you're always concerned about losing assistant coaches. But I feel good about what we have here to offer. I think they understand the ownership. I think they feel like we got something going here, too. I think we'll be in a real good position there to hold our guys.

We needed to make a few more plays. I think field position was an issue and not being able to get enough plays when we needed to.

Whatever your business is, we all have a drama going on in our own lives. We're all unhappy about something. You have sickness, marital problems, a myriad of things going wrong in everybody's life. You have to deal with those things right away. You have to get their full concentration on football. I'd like to be able to communicate even more with my players when things aren't going bad, but it's just like everything else in life. The problems take over, and you wind up chasing the problems. I'd say handling people is the most important thing you do as a coach. Dealing with people, really, is all football is.

It's kind of hard to put your finger on it. There are a lot of things that you could sit here and make excuses about or something.

It's what I lean on. Any time I feel down, like we all do, I think about that. Hey, this is where I'm supposed to be. There's a confidence knowing that God has put you here, and it's a matter of you living this, doing the best you can, working the hardest you can, trying to make it happen. Whether it's going to happen or not, we don't know.

We looked at everything that happened in the preseason, ... and let all of our players look at it and try to learn from it. We're taking a different approach on some of those things now in practice, and, film-wise, we're trying to put a real emphasis on penalties. And somehow we've got to get it across to ourselves on the turnovers, too, because that just kills you.
