Jerry Narron Quotes (335 Quotes)

If somebody from our team is going to catch it, Jason LaRue would be a logical choice. Jason probably hasn't even thought about it.

I talked to these guys that last day (of last season) in St. Louis about coming to spring training in shape. The only way you do that is to take it seriously. I have no clue of what Josh Hancock did this winter. He might have run a marathon for all I know. He might have been throwing off the mound every day. But he was 17 pounds over his requested reporting weight. Can be a successful pitcher at 17 pounds more than he's asked to be Maybe. But we looked at last year. He was on the disabled list for 133 games. We did not see the commitment we wanted to see.

He did a little bit of running. We'll see how he feels (today).

I believe in Major League Baseball, you have to continue to adjust and you have to continue to get better. If they do that, they have a chance to have very good years.

Hopefully, he'll be able to go out on a rehab sometime next week. We'll see how he feels tomorrow. He's getting close.

Yes, it was (a good run). In the eighth, I thought we were going to win.

They rolled some balls through the infield and got some hits, and then Hammond comes in and slips a little bit. But we should make some of those plays.

It was real big. I thought his velocity was better. I thought he kept the ball down much better than he has in the past.

There have been times we haven't used Randy Keisler because he's our long guy. This might free up Keisler for a hitter or two early in the game.

I can't imagine being 19 years old and playing in a major league game - even if it's an exhibition game. He's going to be outstanding.

He's been involved in baseball before as a minority owner with the (St. Louis) Cardinals. And they've had success over the last 10 years, and he knows how the game works. He has a great deal of passion and energy for baseball. He loves the game.

We needed somebody with some length today. You don't expect a starter to go down in the bullpen warming up, but you have to be prepared for it, possibly.

It was a huge step for him. He did a very good job tonight with guys that have hit him in the past.

Anybody who went through what (Griffey) did with surgery wouldn't want to be taking any chances. So I don't blame him. He's available to pinch-hit. He's just not available to run.

It showed up right away on the blood test. We were hoping the blood test was wrong.

I'm sure Pena's going to be sore. Thankfully, there's nothing structurally wrong.

There's no doubt in my mind that he can be a No. 3 hitter. But right now, with Junior here, he's not.

It was poor management on my part. I should've gone out after the second one and said, 'Don't try it unless you can make a strong, accurate throw.' I should've told him before the game.

I know we have some defensive deficiencies, but I know we're much better than we played today defensively. I'm very disappointed. We gave them way too many outs. There were some balls we just didn't make plays on.

Right now it's not as much of a concern as it would be after March 15. Then, it becomes a concern. It's not going to kill him not to pitch today.

He's still one of the best players in the game. We're looking forward to him having a good year.

Wayne and I have the same type of ideas on ways to turn this organization around. We believe in guys earning their way, not just giving it to them.

We know Cruz is going to hit. That's a given. He's going to give you a good at-bat every time, even if he sits there a week.

You don't want to get somebody thrown out at the plate with nobody out. That's Baseball 101. Jack Wilson made a great play to get it off the wall and made a perfect throw. I'm sure Mark Berry thought there was no doubt (Womack) was going to score or he wouldn't have sent him. I'd rather Berry be aggressive than overly conservative.

I'm tickled to death for David Weathers. No one in this game likes to fail ... He's done a great job for us, and a great job with our inexperienced guys in the bullpen. When they've struggled, he's talked with them. They got to see him bounce back.

He did not complain about it. He did not make an excuse. But he did not look in his last start like he did in his first two.

He talked about that. It's well-founded. I think from being with the Cardinals he saw (the benefit of having) Stan Musial and Red Schoendienst around all the time.

I thought Milton threw the ball really well. He made a mistake to Sean, but Case is an outstanding hitter.

I thought Eric threw the ball really well. He pitched seven outstanding innings.

I really believe Tony can help a club, I really believe he can still play in the major leagues. He just did not fit here.

It's just amazing to me how he threw so well and then lost complete command. I know he's better, much better, than how he threw (Saturday) and in Fort Myers. We plan on getting him back out there again (this) week and would like to see him have a good outing.

It was nice just to see him out there on the mound and pitch well. He missed his last start so we only wanted to give him two innings. He did a good job. He threw a little bit in the 'pen after that. He said he felt fine.

I'm a pitching and defense guy, ... I love it.

I don't think there is anywhere better in the country to live. And there are a lot of great athletes who have come from eastern North Carolina and will continue to come from here, so I enjoy trying to share what I've learned with them.

I'm a guy who believes in treating everyone with respect and honesty. With everybody in that clubhouse, I will do that with and to. But I am not going to sit here and say I'm going to treat everyone the same. I believe you earn the right. There might be a play who comes in her tomorrow 50 pounds overweight. But, if he does, he better have had a good year last year.

He's pitched well against us when we've seen him. Every one of those pitchers on the Cardinals gets good movement, they get good leg movement. They command the ball, and that's why they have the best pitching staff in the National League.

The more I've seen him, the more I've liked him. I've been very impressed with the way he's received the baseball. He's a pretty good catcher. He gives a great target, sets up small and gives umpires a chance to see the pitch. He's got real good hands. He gets rid of the ball real quick.

I like it. I might be the only person, but I do like it. The timing's terrible, but I think it's a great idea.

Felipe is going to hit. You won't see anybody up there red-hot all the time. He's a very good hitter from both sides of the plate.

He ran a lot today and felt pretty good. He's just not 100 percent yet.

We've got the kind of club that is going to score runs. We know that. They're not going to get down even when they have a bad game.

For a guy that hadn't started, I thought he did a really good job.

It's nice to see Milton end up throwing as well as he is. He's been inconsistent at times, but we've seen some very good from him.

He's a great competitor, he's fearless. He'll throw any pitch over at any count. You're not going to see a lot of 2-0, 3-1 cookies - he's going to make guys hit his pitch, he's not going to give in to guys.

We're going to get him as much playing time as we can with the other guys here. But he's a very talented young man.

We've got a lot of young, or inexperienced guys, getting a tremendous opportunity. If they want to pitch in the big leagues, they've got to step it up.

It gives other guys an opportunity to pitch that wouldn't normally get a chance.

That's a mistake I want him to learn from. From the dugout, it looked like the throw home might be high (over the cutoff man's head) and that might be the way he read it.
