    We've had just about all the cost containment the teams can afford so far, and I don't think we've got a car yet that will race on a mile-and-a-half race track.

    When we first touched down at Gusev Crater on the night of January 4, 2004, the Columbia Hills seemed impossibly far away. It was a necessary place for us to get to, though, because as we looked across the plains we quickly realized these plains were made of basaltic lava. This was stuff that was interesting but did not tell us what we really sought to know about Gusev Crater, and that is whether there had been water here. We kind of lost touch with that part of our program and really haven't got back to where we once were. I think we can get there again. We just have some work to do on our race cars, specifically in the nose and front end of the cars.

    I looked around and we were about a mile-and-a-half from land, and I thought, 'OK, I'm going to drown now.' And then I started to flail out and panic. I gradually calmed down and I got home. But the reality was that in that moment I was panicking and I feel like that to me was the clue about Ripley, that Ripley constantly finds himself out of his depth in the film and then reacts very, very badly.




    At a mile-and-a-half, it's anybody's game. It depends on how it all falls together. Speed is always a big factor, but fortunately I don't think he needs to go to the lead like he did last time. He can do anything. He can sit off the pace, and that's got to be a big thing in his favor.
