If she was going to die, Marla didn't want to know about it.
Marla's philosophy of life, she told me, is that she can die at any moment. The tragedy of her life is that she doesn't.
In a final e-mail (she said) 'We're helping lots of kids with medical care' -- this is on the day that Marla died -- 'This place continues to break my heart. Need to get out of here, but it's hard.'
The girls kind of got in a hurry at the end of the first half, which was what they wanted us to do. We talked at the half about just playing our game and in the third quarter we did. Marla hit a couple of big shots and we settled back down.
Marla tells me how in the wild you don't see old animals because as soon as they age, animals die. If they get sick or slow down, something stronger kills them. Animals aren't meant to get old. Marla lies down on her bed and undoes the tie on her bathrobe, and says our culture has made death something wrong. Old animals should be an unnatural exception. Freaks.
Where else in the world is a government helping the civilians they harm in conflict Marla was very proud of this fact,
