    This is a sad day for the Minnesota Twins, Major League Baseball and baseball fans everywhere. I loved Kirby deeply. A tremendous teammate, Kirby will always be remembered for his never-ending hustle, infectious personality, trademark smile and commitment to the community.

    This is a great loss for baseball. Puck was one of my favorite people to compete against on the field and to be around off the field. I will always remember how Kirby played the game with joy and how he brought a smile to your face just by saying hello.

    He never, ever took a second off out there. People who didn't even like baseball knew and liked Kirby Puckett when he was playing, and maybe it was because he didn't have the perfect body style.




    He was so much better of an athlete than people thought. Back then, he wasn't heavy at all. He was solid as a rock. He was faster than anything. He would hit the ball back to the pitcher on two hops and beat it out at first base. He was incredibly fast. We used to play basketball in the mornings at the YMCA. Kirby was a great basketball player. People think Kirby was overweight when he played, but he was rock-solid.

    Johnson has 13 goals and four assists this season. Kirby has excellent ball-control skills, ... He's very explosive with his ability to spin away, getting clear of defenders and going one-on-one with goaltenders. And if Kirby is going one-on-one with a goalie, the goalie is usually going to lose the point.

    I think the biggest thing I remember was there are so many animals in this state named Kirby, and if somebody had a cow or a horse, they named it Herbie. I was always second fiddle to Puck, and I loved every minute of it.

    He always busted his tail off and had a great thing to say to everybody in the clubhouse. I can guarantee you all this, as long as I'm running this baseball team, we will play the game with respect, run the ball out and give you a show, because that is what Kirby would want us to do.

    To black athletes, he was an icon. Everybody looked up to him. It's Dave Winfield, Andre Dawson and Kirby Puckett for black athletes (to look up to). It's tough to swallow.

    As a youngster, Kirby just loved to play the game of baseball. He wasn't as talented as a lot of the other kids we had in the program, but because he loved to play the game so much he worked hard and was very dedicated.


    It's a sad day, but you can't help but smile when you think of Kirby Puckett. You really appreciate his baseball ability. But this is a time to reflect on him as a person. I'm in between whether I should cry or laugh.


    Everybody has a problem along the way. People are going to remember what they want to remember. Everybody is different. I don't know what people want to remember. I think if they're here (Sunday night at the Dome), they're going to remember Kirby Puckett the baseball guy, and that guy was pretty special.
