We're starting to design this new transportation system to support the International Space Station (ISS) once it's complete.
ISS is the only place to go now for independent proxy advice,
This mission in particular has been designed to provide great benefit to all parties, not only for the explorers who fly, but also to the ISS program as a whole,
Even though we feel the company is executing on its business plan, we believe that given the more mature stage of ISS (Internet Security), significant acceleration of growth is a big challenge,
The availability of more than one transportation system offers a robustness that has great advantage over reliance on a single system. We would like an independent way of getting access to the International Space Station (ISS).
Our task was doing maintenance and repairs to keep the station in a good state for the return of the shuttle flights and resumption of major ISS construction.
The goal for 2006 is to reach a comprehensive agreement with the United States in the first half of the year on the ISS until 2011.
If we hit those requirements, no longer will just professional cosmonauts and astronauts from the various space agencies be able to reach the ISS, but also researchers. Only proper researchers will be able to conduct space science experiments with the proper amount of exactitude.
It seems to me there is a licence agreement dispute over that now, but the licence was with ISS, not me,
It is clear that the White House has made a policy decision that we are going to honor our international agreements on ISS, and we are going to continue to fly the shuttle in order to launch the international components.
Connolly said that the current plan is to start off with two lunar missions per year. That frequency was derived in part from the capabilities that were assigned to the CEV i.e. the ability to function in space for up to 6 months and the launch rate that would likely be used to support the ISS. There is nothing magic about 6 months ... backed its way into lunar missions.
This is an important milestone because ISS is a truly independent expert ... they concluded after very comprehensive process that this deal makes sense on the strategic logic, on the economic logic, that we can execute it ... we feel good about it.
