I have a kitlin black as neet,
A canty kit wi’ ways sae sweet.
Its nose is white, its whiskers leet.
Yestreen it caught a mouse.
I told owd Meg aboot my cat.
She said, ‘ Gow! I think nowt to that;
My ginger puss can kill a rat
In t’ yard or in t’ hen-house.’
(Her ginger cat has skelly eyes.
How can she stand its nattery cries!
Happen it won a siller prize
Mony lang years ago.)
She said, ‘Thi kitlin’s ower-fed,
It’s ower-kissed an’ cosseted;
T’ ninnyhammer ‘ull soon be dead;
One mouse is a poor show!’
