Granny Mat: Doves are in ther cotes,
T’ cow is in her byre,
Puppies noo are sleepin’,
Dyin’ doon is t’ fire;
At t’ end o’ daytime
Sleep is ony reet,
So cuddle doon, my lile luve,
An’ say, “Good neet”.
Matilda: Hullets hoot in fir trees,
Foxes are awake,
Badgers under t’ owd oak
With each other laik;
Like a gowden bonfire
T’ moon is toppin’ t’ rise,
Lile stars are laughin’,
Granny dear, fra’ skies.
Granny Mat: Childer sudn’t argue
Wi’ grown-ups who knaw best,
T’ Lord, He made neet special
So ‘at folk could rest:
He made Day an’ He made Neet,
It’s in t’ Bible, barn;
Marry! when thoo’s owder
Thoo’s a vast to lam!
