MARY JANE: I’m ready for off.
He’s nowt to me an’ I’m nowt to him.
MRS. HARDCASTLE Wrap up, Mary Jane, thoo’s an awfu’ cough. . . .
She’s leddylike sort, varra tall an’ trim.
Happy? He doant deserve sich a thing !’
MARY JANE: I want to forgit him for ever and aye.
MRS. HARDCASTLE: To think ‘at he gied thee a courtin’ ring,
An’ made up to her on t’followin’ day.
Niver mind, Luve, it’s a cryin’ shame.
Thoo ought to have shown him up, my dear.
MARY JANE: As if I mind! Goodbye, I’m for hame.
MRS. HARDCASTLE: A spot of rain? Nay, Lass, that’s a tear !
