Market days it allus rains,
An’ yestreen it wur snowin’,
Varra awkward is our trains
When t’owd trap isn’t goin’-
But I did well, I sold our eggs
At one an’ four a dozen.
An’ as I wur unfastenin’ pegs
Of stall, Bess Norton cousin
Came up. He’d takken doon his stall,
“Noo, wilta have a lift,
For t’wind is blowin’ hard an’ all “-
Snow had begun to drift.
We started off an’ for a mile
He niver spoke a word,
But, after passin’ Yorla* stile
He whistled like a bird
In spring; then said, “I’se got a horse,
A cow, some hens an’ pigs,
A house, a garden an’ of course
A cur, at Boltby Riggs
A Dutch barn full of good sweet hay,
And noo I want a wife.”
Aa! Mr. Matt, what could I say,
Ne’er more mazed in my life!
