Easter is the most significant holy event in the Christian world as it commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the culmination of the observance of Holy Week, which starts with Palm Sunday, and continues with Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Ultimately, Easter marks the completion of the whole Lent season, a 40-day solemn period of self-reflection and fasting that starts on Ash Wednesday.
Easter is very much associated with the Jewish “Passover” due to its religious context and tradition, making it dependent on the latter’s date of occurrence. Also, for centuries, a lot of religious scholars made complicated computations for when Easter should occur. After much deliberation, and to simplify matters, it was decided that Easter Sunday and Holy Week are to be observed either in March or April.
American Catholics, Lutherans, and other Christian denominations celebrate Easter with events such as Easter Vigil, Easter Mass and services, and generally of prayers.
Easter symbolizes hope and new beginnings. For many devout Christians, it is the renewal of Man’s Commandment with God. It is a chance to leave the old sinful ways and live a life following His Law. Easter allows us to reflect upon our lives and see the purpose of our being in this world. It cleanses our spirits or very hearts.
Certainly, Easter is a joyous occasion to share with our loved ones. Apart from religious traditions and events, secular celebrations fill Easter with fun and excitement. Popular games like Easter egg hunts delight children and adults alike. Easter eggs, which denote rebirth and new life, come in bright, colorful decorations.
Traditionally, chicken eggs were dyed and used as Easter eggs, but modern versions include candy-filled plastic eggs, or egg-shaped chocolates strategically placed in hiding. In some states, children enjoy coloring eggs (usually hard-boiled), which are later used in the Easter egg hunts, or just as static decorations. It has also been a custom that during Easter Mondays, the US President holds an “Easter egg rolling” event at the White House for little children.
A popular character related to this custom is the Easter Bunny, who children believe will come and fill their empty baskets with goodies and gifts, much like Santa Claus at Christmas.
Families usually gather during Easter for parties, banquets, commemorative dinners, and the like. Typical types of food served during these are honey-buttered Easter ham, roast lamb or chicken (main course), boiled egg, Easter pie, Brussels sprouts, pasta, warm cross buns, simnel cake. It is good to note that meat is deliberately served in Easter meals.
That is to compensate for the traditional “no meat” meals on Good Fridays and even on Black Saturdays when fish is the accepted main dish. Also, Americans serve ham on Easter compared to other countries that serve lamb.
Well became a practical choice when the demand for wool declined after the Second World War, thereby decreasing the supply of lamb legs. Plus, ham keeps longer and can be prepared in lots of ways.
