    Pedro does a lot of his work indoors anyway. We wanted him to not pound as much early on in camp, but he's going to work into his routine and do what he needs to do.

    Pretty exciting night for us. Nice win for us in the first game of a homestand. Now we've got two more big ones.

    To put him on the DL right away would be playing it safe, obviously. But it's also important that we don't rush him onto the DL because he is feeling better today. So even if he doesn't play this weekend, he might be able to go on Tuesday.

    This is why we don't anoint anyone early in camp. Things change, and they may change again.

    He did a great job of playing a little Houdini act there. He had more or less a C-plus game - a C-minus game, maybe - and was able to make big pitches.

    I don't think of it that way. If you do, that gives an attitude that we're not as good as they are. I don't want my team to feel they have to take a back seat to anybody.

    Any time Jose hits a home run, I try to forget it real quick. I let him know that he needs to forget about it real quick, so I don't get excited about home runs. He knows I don't like for him to hit the ball in the air. But he's got some pop.

    It wasn't something that jumped out at me. Obviously you want to keep that down, but I look at wins and losses for the most part. I think that Victor was in a rhythm at times, out of a rhythm at times. He can be more in a consistent rhythm.

    We're human beings. Sometimes, guys put too much on themselves. People saw today what we can do. I think the New York fans are going to love this team.

    It's always nice to get the guys out there moving around. You sit back and watch guys throw on the side, but the only way you can get a good feel is to get into game action.

    It's obviously a very important stretch for us, and we'll just play it as we go. That's the way we've kept it all year, one game and one series at a time.

    Obviously bringing in Wagner, a legitimate closer who makes you feel real good at the end of the game when you give him the ball, all of that stuff is really comforting for most managers.

    He'll be fine. He's a good kid. Goes about his business. He's got a lot of teammates who can take him under their wing and I'm sure they'll do that.

    The kids are obviously part of our future, and the fact is they're going to experience, hopefully, a very exciting pennant race. Everybody likes their hits. It's being involved in something that could be special and getting experience when the game counts. Mets fans and the organization should be proud of David Wright and Jose Reyes, and Victor Diaz had a huge night also. And Jake is getting his feet wet.


    We'll see how it goes. But I like his body. He's got a great athletic body, of course. I watched him a little bit in BP, and he's got quick hands and he's got speed.

    I'm not saying Cliff can't hit him. We're just trying to get everyone in the mix. I sat down and had a conversation with Cliff and he's fine with it.

    Tonight could be totally different. I'm going by respect for his ability.

    A big walk by Julio and we got a break at the end. Those are the kind of games that are nice to win.

    There's an energy to this team. There's an energy about this team. I'm as excited about it as our fans are. What did Mills Lane (old boxing ref) used to say Let's get it on.

    The reactions you get from the kids are really special. I try to be light and crack jokes. I'm always a little bit goofy around kids that's my personality. To me, that's great. You've got to break the ice.

    He is part of the team and he's going to be a part of the team. We'll get him going. He's going to be fine. We feel real good about him, even though he's one of the guys on the team that's maybe struggling a little bit right now. We'll just continue to give him the ball when we can, and I think before too long he'll start to feel good about himself.

    That's good news. I spoke to him today and it sounded like he had marbles in his mouth.

    It was good to see him relax a little bit and get going. Obviously, spring training is not the best barometer for how you base these guys but, you know, he was 0-for-20 or whatever and he had a couple knocks so that's why you don't put a lot of emphasis on games like this because you can turn it around in one day.

    A lot of guys could have said I'll take the surgery and take their time coming back. But he got back out there because he felt a responsibility to this team and I applaud him for that.

    If they look at the standings then they know we're back in the mix. I trust they understand it's time to play.

    I'm not disappointed. It'd be nice if he was here, but he pitched winter ball, so I'm not as concerned.

    He's one of the best hitters in baseball. I've seen him for a long time. This is what I expect from him.

    It's just like any other thing. You have personal things you have to deal with or whatever, and he had permission to take care of it. Nothing to do with injuries or doctors.

    There is little question about David becoming a great player. But it will be interesting to see how he adjusts this year. He won't be a surprise to anyone anymore. The pitchers know about him, and they will make adjustments. I want to see how he adjusts.

    We have to just go with how he feels day-to-day. Pedro knows how to get ready, and he knows his body as well as anyone, so I didn't go in with any preconceived ideas or notions about anything. His arm is healthy, and obviously he's a little bit behind.
