Willie Randolph Quotes (287 Quotes)

Gotta do it on the field, brother. In a perfect world, yeah, I'd like somebody to step up.... To have that solid lineup, solid foundation every day is what you like as a manager.

We're going to miss (Mark) Mulder, ... That's good, I guess, huh

It was my choice, I wanted something different, something funky.

Every situation is totally different for me. Every team that faces Barry Bonds has the same dilemma. You just pick your spots in the course of the game and you try to make the right decision and hope that it's executed. It's no different than any other team. Obviously, he's still a presence and obviously he's still one of the best hitters in the game and you have to be very conscious of him.

At this point in time, this balances out the way I want it to balance out. We're thinking that we'd use Victor more than a 12th pitcher.

He still could go on one of those tears. He's still a guy you game-plan around, and I still have tremendous respect for him.

To stay in shape as long as he has is phenomenal. His leadership is important. He's the type of guy who brings a lot to the table.

Now the facilities aren't there. Just worn-out lots. You need 18 guys and 18 gloves, some bats and balls to play. Basketball you need a ball and five other guys. You probably have the sneakers already.

I'm legit now, ... I won't be breaking Billy Martin's or Earl Weaver's records, but that's been building up for a long time. I don't want to get a reputation, but I want to protect my players.

I'm sorry to see him go. He's been a great player for a lot of years. Obviously, it was a decision he's thought long and hard about. It's a very tough decision.

Today, it was obviously pretty much bad game management. He gave up an 0-2 home run to Barfield, which is not what you want to do. He made bad pitches at the wrong time. He has to do a better job of managing his game.

You bring so much more to the table with all those tools. Unless he's really setting himself back, that's part of being a professional athlete. We didn't want him to run through a wall or anything like that, but ... he might hit a three-run homer to win a ballgame.

The thing I liked about today more than anything was we picked each other up. I really thought the pitchers did a nice job of picking guys up and we had to scratch for some runs, but the bottom line is that Billy came in and closed it on a great throw by Carlos.

It's nice. I look forward to it, man. I love the competition.

It throws too many things out of whack if you do that. It's going to shorten Pedro Martinez, and maybe Tom Glavine's turns, and you don't want to do that. You want your best pitchers to pitch. You don't want to lengthen their time away from taking the ball. You want to give them the ball more, actually.

I saw him on TV. He's got a good curve, a sneaky fastball and he pitches inside. I was impressed. But we're going to attack him. You don't give him too much respect. He's a young player, and you've got to attack him. You don't let him get too comfortable.

Keep it going, I love it. The guys were having fun tonight and obviously everyone was making a contribution. That's what you need to do the job on the road and hopefully we can get something special going.

I'm going to stop saying I've seen it all. Because every time I do, something else crazy happens.

Carlos knows how good he is. And that kind of inner confidence is huge in making it here.

We'll continue to let everybody play. This is a competition. I'm not ready to make a judgment at this time. Day to day, things change.

We thought he was a defensive guy. Then in spring training, we saw he had some thunder in his hands. We'll take it.

I don't pay any attention to that -- it's spring training. He's just getting his work in.

I expect us to win. I'm not about making predictions. But yes, any manager worth his salt is going to say, 'I expect to win.' That's just me. That's how it's always been.

It's there. We made good contact five or six times tonight and we didn't have much to show for it.

Pedro will be ready. I trust Pedro that he'll be ready to go. That's what I go by.

I can't get caught up in that. I know the fans would love to get payback, but what they (the fans) don't understand is you still have to play the game. We want to win the games very badly. We can't think that if we don't do well how will it affect you mentally. Regardless of how this plays out, we still have to play them again.

It was his first time out after having very little Spring Training. He didn't have a feel for the ball. It was very cold, very slippery day. It was something that got blown out of proportion. I know that he knows that he wasn't trying to intentionally hit anyone. You will see that his command will be better.

It builds confidence. Making a contribution to the team is important for a young player. I'm happy for him. He works hard. He wants to win. You root for a kid like that.

Anytime you go deep on a pitcher in early BP like this, you've got to tip your hat to them, because those guys are way ahead of us.

I just told them to make sure they don't like the taste they have in their mouth, that they spit it out right away,

It's nice to finish strong and end the season on a good note. It's nicer to be above .500 than below it. But .500 is mediocre. We want to be better than that.

But he's played a lot of baseball, you can tell, ... He's got a more natural flow. The kids in his country the Dominican Republic play a lot and gain a lot of baseball poise. He seems sure of himself.

At 3-and-0, you don't want to give him a ball anywhere around the plate.

Listen, when he pitches if I don't see what I like to see I'm not going to be totally patient. You go by your track record.

I think you just have to give the pitcher credit. He threw the ball well. Usually the pitcher has the upper hand when you haven't seen him, and he was a little bit funky with his delivery.

It was ugly. It was not the way to do things to get back in and stay in (the race).

That feeling you get when you close the door can be contagious. It can change the whole attitude toward winning when you have someone of the caliber of Wagner, Mariano.

He'll be here in a couple days -- it might even be tomorrow, ... There's nothing in his contract about it. We just told him we wanted him back. We want him to come back and help us.

I'm still going to stay even. I'm going to still stay positive. This is tough. I hurt just like everybody else when you lose a tough game. It's not going to discourage me. It's not going to change my attitude. I'm going to be out there tomorrow pumping these guys up to play again. But this is as tough as it's been this year. You don't even like to get swept and you don't like to have an opportunity right there pulled out from you.

You can't expect to win games against tough teams if you don't execute.

The main thing is that Boone is at peace and content with the decision he made. I wish him well.

You have to pitch inside. Most teams that are successful pitch in there. No big deal. Just baseball.

Any time you have to be helped off the field, you're not going to make your next start.

He's been with us all year. Obviously, he's been hurt off and on, but he's getting his work in. We'll give him a day and see how he looks.

I'm not thinking about other teams or what people think about what we're doing, ... I'm just trying to win games.

I would think that any team at this point in time, given where we are, would be pretty weak if they let these two games affect them,

We keep fighting back. My team plays hard all the time. We don't give up.

He's been able to get himself out of trouble. That's important. He's shown me something.
