Friendly to peace, but not to me!
Friendly to peace, but not to me!
Then love in every heart would reign,
And war would cease to roar;
And cruel and bloodthirsty men
Would thirst for blood no more.
In every heart Are sown the sparks that kindle fiery war.
O for a lodge in some vast wilderness, Some boundless contiguity of shade, Where rumour of oppression and deceit, Of unsuccessful or successful war, Might never reach me more
War lays a burden on the reeling state,And peace does nothing to relieve the weight.
They may assault, they may distress;
But cannot quench Thy love to me,
Nor rob me of the Lord my peace.
Oh to have a lodge in some vast wilderness. Where rumors of oppression and deceit, of unsuccessful and successful wars may never reach me anymore.
