    There is something for everybody and everyone does well in at least one aspect of the class. My business majors do well in the economic portion, my political science majors do well in the politics portion. I'm basically here to be the guide.

    It was created out of my personal interest and I took it to Dr. Woods, the head of the African American Studies department.

    So I became a black kid who had a largely white education. I always looked at it like I got the best of both worlds.

    African American Studies majors and minors have diverse interests. It's great as a teacher to invent classes that meet those needs.

    That song and that group said so much about what was going on in Los Angeles at that time. We were going through this terrible crack epidemic that devastated so many people, including some of my own family. It was music that was saying something about the community, about that experience. I knew it was important.


    I want to reach all different kinds of students and share my love of hip-hop, help them understand the culture, not just the big time, mainstream thing it has become. Now that I've created the course, hopefully it can keep going when I'm not here any more. The students will always keep coming. Hip-hop isn't going anywhere.
