Tom Lehman Quotes (49 Quotes)

I just didn't play well. I played poorly this morning and poorly for the first nine holes this afternoon. But you know, Geoff played very well. You have to give him a lot of credit. He played extremely well and made a lot of clutch putts. I am proud of the way I performed this week though.

There were some fantastic pairings that in some ways confirmed my feelings about how to pair people, which is based more on competitive styles and personalities than whether you play the same ball,

It was hard to believe. I'm just glad my wife and kids weren't with me. If it wasn't so serious, it would almost be amusing. I mean, how many times when you're driving, do you get shot at

You never see them give up. They're never out of a hole, never satisfied and they hate to lose. They also putt the same way. Both like to die the ball into the hole with the same speed, so they can read putts together accurately.

It was just a very random thing. Random things happen in this world. I'm most happy he tried that before I got my kids. Otherwise, my 3-year-old would have been sitting in that seat. Anyway, all's well that ends well.

The way I look at it is I would love to earn my spot.

It takes time to start where I started and try to work off all the flab. You have to give something up, and to me it was always the kind of thing that, 'Well, I can't do it because I've got to work on my game. I've got to work on my chipping, work on my driving. I've got to do something with my game.' I said, 'You know what, it's not going to do me any good at all if I can't walk the golf course because my knees hurt so bad.' I'll give up three hours a day of chipping or three hours on the range to make it so my knees don't hurt.

You get to a point in your career where you either decide it's time to get serious and make some changes, or you quit. I love golf too much, and there's too much to play for to quit.

I'll probably relax, play a few holes and put on my shorts and have some fun.

I would love to be a part of it as both a captain and a player. If it doesn't work out that way, I can accept that.

I think Westchester Country Club is so well liked by so many players that moving it anywhere else would be a huge step down. Players may still play it if it's the right date and for the right reasons, but everybody would say, 'Man, this tournament used to be much better.' It'd be a huge disappointment.

Something changed that day. It was a turning point, and we're still feeling the effect. In every other event before that, it felt like we got out-teamed. Now we're the ones making each other better. We're the ones inspiring each other. You look at this team, and there are a lot of young guys. I don't know if we can win every Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup for the next 10 years, but we're going to be very tough.

I've always felt like she's Secretariat. You can give her minor adjustments -- adjust the bit in her mouth -- but it's like, 'Let her go.' She's that good.

I did a lot of things I'm very proud of. I just didn't have it. I hit too many loose ones. I probably shouldn't have won this (Saturday) morning. I didn't play well against Chad but he played a little worse. And I didn't deserve to beat Geoff Ogilvy in the afternoon.

Unlike previous Ryder Cup captains who have stressed that being the captain is their sole role, Tom Lehman does not shy away from talk of playing, too. If I'm playing at that level, or I am definitely one of them, the answer to would I play would be absolutely yes, ... I'm not there yet. But I'm working on it. But we want the 12 best guys.

I'm playing better golf. I'm giving myself chances, and it's been awhile. The biggest thing is controlling my emotions.

That pairing should have worked. Though it's 'never say never', I would probably have to have the guys come to me and say they wanted to play together,

Is it OK to play the last two holes I haven't seen them yet.

    8. Do you realize, ... that if your ball is hanging on the lip of the hole, you only have 10 seconds to putt it in 16-2 Sometimes, you can even see it rolling forward, but you have to putt it in 10 seconds, or it's one shot penalty. So they're telling you to hit a ball that's moving, which is also illegal.

Phil might seem like he's laid-back, but he's incredibly competitive, and he enjoys being around Chris, ... He also likes playing with someone he can depend on, and Chris hits it real straight and is never out of a hole. Also, some guys are not real rah-r

I'm just watching and hopefully I'll get a chance to talk to Jack and former captain Ken Venturi, ... I thought Venturi was a great captain. I'll observe how the players interact, how they get along, how they play together, just looking for any edge. I think it's really important that they win this week. It's a big week for the American guys. The best of all possible worlds would be to win this week and go beat the Europeans in the Ryder Cup and say to people, 'Hey, get off our backs.' But it's more for pride's sake. We're good players, and we've proved it.

I asked him if he was busy. He said, 'Fairly.' We talked about handling the media. It was a friendly round of golf.

We want to have players who are winning tournaments. I wouldn't feel good about it, quite frankly, unless I started winning, and that hasn't happened in a while.

I'd like to be in a position to give my spot up if I had to.

I would like to see that attitude carry forward in every event played by the U. S. team. That exact same mental edge was great to see.

Someone said to me that the Presidents Cup was making my job a lot easier, and in a way he was right, ... It was good to get an idea of what's going to work at the Ryder Cup and what's not. I learned a lot watching the guys play, their mannerisms, how loose they were, how uptight they were. You can only see those things in person.

It's very satisfying. I'm proud that I've done it, but I'm embarrassed I didn't do it 15 years ago.

I want players to enjoy the course. Losing your ball is no fun, so we wanted the player to be able to at least hack it back into play from the desert.

You open the paper and read these things that happen to people. Totally random.

I played poorly for the first nine holes but Geoff played very well. You've got to give him a lot of credit. I just didn't have it today but I gave it everything I had.

It was just so exciting. I was so happy the U.S. won, but both teams played so well. You know the international players, you see most of them all year on our tour, but the U.S. team showed a lot of courage and were motivated and were confident.

If there's a way to control everyone to have their phone or Blackberry on just a vibrate mode and having a place where they could go to make a phone call, that would be the best of all worlds,

You have to move it out there a little bit off the tee, but I think the biggest difference is that you have to hit it straighter. Even with the changes, I still think it's going to come down to having a great short game. It is longer, but if the short game is working, it's going to be a good week.

The way you make big scores on any course that's set up like this is to get aggressive out of the rough and then put yourself in a position that goes from bad to worse. That's one thing you need to pay attention to. If your lie isn't good and you can't put it in a spot where you can play from, you're wiser just to lay it up to 80 or 90 yards where you can sand wedge it close.

I'm just here to watch, to see who's playing with who and how it works -- how they interact, was it good, was it bad and if they would want to do it again.

If we went over to Ireland and just played a great match and our guys played phenomenal golf and they were loose and focused and motivated, and they were together and they put on a great show and lose, how can you not feel good about that in some ways

He whipped the field playing lousy. I give him a lot of credit.

I've not thought that far ahead. All I know is we want our strongest team on the course.

Now it's back there where you have to hit driver, and you're hitting right at a bunker. You can't carry the trees. There's high rough left. You've made a difficult hole even worse,

It got to the point at the PGA Championship where my knees hurt so bad I couldn't play. My knees hurt so bad I couldn't swing. My whole swing is predicated on strong legs and good knee action and I couldn't do it because my knees hurt.

I don't really worry about our team a whole lot. I have a lot of confidence in our team, in our guys. It's just that ideas creep into my mind. I'm the kind of person with a lot of ideas, and I think of them over a 4-foot birdie putt sometimes. That's the real problem.

I have to give him a lot of credit, because he definitely didn't play his best golf this week. He whipped the field playing lousy.
