The thing we've tried to do is share the wealth, get more guys involved. We're sharing the ball more. We're trying to pressure more defensively. On offense, we have more guys involved, that's the biggest thing. We don't have a guy who every night we can count on to get 25 and 10. We hope we can do that by committee.

You have to beat them they're not going to beat themselves because they're a very cerebral basketball team. They're not the most athletic team in the world, but they're going to negate your athletic ability by playing smart.

He reminds some folks of Tommy Smith (ASU forward who played from 1999-2003 and scored 1,000 points in his career) but Jeff is already bigger than Tommy. Jeff is athletic, tough and can do it at both ends of the floor. Expect good things from him.

He's so athletic and so physical. He's a smart basketball player. I've always been impressed about his demeanor on the court. It never changes. He's a fighter and a warrior. He's a class player. I've enjoyed watching him. I'm glad he's leaving.

He really ran the ball club against California. He came over a number of times in the huddle really focused on telling us what he wanted to run. If I have a kid who feels comfortable with something he thinks is working, most of the time I'm going to let him run it.

Our reputation nationally is very good right now. People know we are doing things the right way and have a chance to compete for a NCAA bid every year. We need to create some energy and win our share of early season games. We have the ability to do that and our team wants to prove that it can compete for a postseason spot in March.

Not in the eight years since I've been here have I seen the conference like this.

We met with the six returning players from last year and in those meetings my staff and I went over what each of them needs to do to improve their skills and help the team, ... With the improvements that all the returning players have made by spending the summer on campus and working in the weight room, in conditioning and on their skills, we have a chance to be right where we were last year and that is competing for an NCAA Tournament spot.

The one thing we're trying to stress is to make sure we get good possessions. We didn't get a shot the first five times against USC, but fortunately for us our defense was solid enough to where they didn't score much either.

What we need is for each player to look at how Ike worked and progressed, ... He trusted our staff. He did the little things. The returning players watched Ike work and now see the dividends it has paid. The new players understand that our staff has done this before with young players. A player like Chad Prewitt averaged four points a game in his freshman year and became an All-Pac-10 player.

They know each other on the basketball floor, but they also are good for each other. Jeff is more cerebral and knows how to keep his emotions in check. Regardless of what happens (tonight), we'll give them off on Thursday.

There was some talk in the papers that OSU was going to beat us because we've lost five in a row, but we have had some great chances to win games and we just couldn't come through in the end. This is a very balanced (conference) all the teams could beat each other.

The Pac-10 Tournament is our next assignment and anytime we have an assignment whether it's on the floor or in the classroom I tell these guys to do their very best. And that's what they did today.

We talked at the half about making sure we came out and did not have a lull. We wanted to make sure we stayed aggressive, moved the basketball and moved our bodies. I thought they did a great job of that.
