Look at it from the point of view of the animals that live in your garden. They did not evolve in a tidy landscape, they evolved in a landscape where leaves and branches and whatever fell off the tree and just lay there.
For most of that time, I've also been a keen gardener, but for many years I failed to make the connection between gardening and science.
THAT'S THE trouble with wildlife gardening. For so long it's been a refuge for anecdote and old wives' tales that get handed down and trotted out. No-one's had anything original to say about wildlife gardening for years.
The average gardener probably knows little about what is going on in his or her garden.
Most gardeners don't need me telling them that it's good to have year-round interest. You want a garden with as many flowers, for as long as possible, and that's what the pollinators want too. My advice is to garden just to suit yourself and the bees and the butterflies will be perfectly happy.
I have to keep up with the scientific literature as part of my job, but increasingly I found myself reading things that weren't really relevant to my academic work, but were relevant to gardening.
