Jeff Gundy Quotes (119 Quotes)

It depends on who the one is. We hope he keeps improving.

If you're a fan that comes a lot, it's tough to watch right now.

We didn't play well and we didn't have the personality on our team of mental or physical toughness.

He's going through that natural period where people want to nitpick the very few negatives he may have instead of extolling all his positives, ... And in a little over 31 minutes a game he averages 18 and 8. He comes to work every day. He's totally selfless. Yet some want to badger the guy about whatever perceived shortcomings he has. I find that unfortunate because if they spent half the time looking at all his positives it would be a much better story.

I don't care how hard you play, if you don't shoot the ball competently, you're going to have a hard time. We do just enough good to lose close. That's what we've been all season. It's mind-boggling. I know some of our guys killed themselves out there tonight and while that should certainly be complimented, this is about winning.

There's a lot that goes into winning and a lot that goes into losing. Our second-half defense just led to another close loss.

I thought our bench played substandard. We had a good start, and then our bench came in and gave up the lead.

We're not thinking about that. You can only take care of today. Worrying about down the road, percentages you have to win that's wasted energy.

This isn't new. It's the same old, same old. We have to put in young guys to compete, so it starts with competing hard. As we compete hard, we make far too many mistakes and that's why we have the record we have. We're a mistake-laden, inconsistently competitive team.

They turned it up in the second half, and we had no response. You've got to give them credit for that. They play well, and they're well-coached.

Tracy's obviously struggled and I thought tonight he had a little bit more of a bounce to his step. I thought he drove it and made some nice plays. I thought he looked better.

I didn't think Yao was particularly as good tonight as he has been. There's obviously a huge burden on his shoulders right now, but we're capable of making (shots) and we didn't tonight.

He's a fairly intelligent player. He's undersized. He's got pretty good feet. At the lower levels, he's proven he can rebound.

You should get effort. You're not paid to try hard. That should be given. We're paid to produce, all of us, myself included. We're not right now. To lose the same way three straight games should be disturbing to all of us, because it shows that either we don't believe in what we're doing, we don't thrust each other enough, or the plan is flawed.

One of the things I really do believe is - and it would've affected our two guys this year, so it wouldn't have been good - I don't believe anybody on sub-.500 teams should be in the All-Star game. It should be all a reward for winning. Now that would affect our guys which, I'm glad no one took my advice for this year.

There's going to be some bumps in the road certainly. You don't sit out that long in this competitive of a league and make it back the you were playing before. You saw tonight he started out great and then he couldn't make (shots).

There will be a lot of sacrifices that have to be made. We've sort of protected ourselves in case we're not as healthy as we hope to be. If everybody's healthy, there's only 240 minutes to go around. It'll be challenging.

I think he is the best regular-season center in the NBA now. Some other guys may play better in the playoffs, but he's the best during the season because he comes to play every night.

We're either near death or near birth.

It was part defense and probably them missing shots they couldn't make.

Our guys try hard on defense. Any time a team goes 1-for-18 (to start a quarter), they are probably going to hit some of those shots most times. We got back and made things difficult for them.

Going forward, (McGrady) is going to have missed 35 games and a few more by not being able to finish the games. Most of those games were home games. On top of that, he had a period in January and February, he was healthy enough. We're going to need him to be healthy and playing very, very well for us to make the improvement we want to make going forward.

That means zero because it doesn't matter who we win against, whether it is a division team or not. We are happy any time we win.

He's had many good stretches, it's just that sometimes we get caught up in the numbers. I look at the whole thing, his pick-and-roll coverage, his transition defense. I think he's gotten better from his first game in the NBA through now.

I know what inspiring basketball is. When we're dead in the water and we're not playing the way we're capable of, I'm going to say that. But tonight we were very inspiring.

I don't look any more forward than the time when we were injured. Your job as a coach is to maximize the abilities of what is on hand at any given time.

When he feels like he's capable of playing and the trainers and doctors concur and I concur, then he'll go back out there and play.

The positive is they found something they can fix. It's been a string of bad fortune for him injury-wise, but we're happy the doctor has been able to locate something we can do something about.

Trying to judge a big guy too early is a mistake. If he wants to be an NBA player, he has to stick with it. You never know he may get an opportunity here.

We have to rectify so many things on offense. We're a high-turnover team now, which is No. 1. Secondly, we're a very poor shooting team from all areas, from 2-point range, 3-point range and the free-throw line. We shoot more air balls now on the perimeter than any team I've never seen any NBA team miss as badly as we do.

He has become the point guard we needed him to become. He gives us passion. He pushes it up the floor and penetrates. The one thing he has to add to his game is poise. Today, he had poise when they were making their run.

I just want Yao to recover when he can and become an even better basketball player. I've got enough problems already without being a vicious capitalist pig.

(McGrady) can hurt you with the shot or the pass. Obviously a pick-and-roll with him and Yao together is hard to guard.

I'm not surprised when (Yao) plays well. He is prepared every day. He works hard every day. He's one of the few guys who doesn't need outside motivation. He is without question the best regular-season center in basketball.

We have good enough players, but there are very few guys in this league who can draw a second defender to them. Those are the guys who make your offense good, whether it's a post-up guy, a dribble penetration guy or a pick-and-roll guy.

He's already told me some things. I would just say this When we meet, frank discussion between owner and coach is always valuable. I welcome anything he has to say and I will reciprocate with anything I think is necessary going forward to make us who we w

We have to get a team that represents what our standards are. On the road trip and the Boston game prior to that, we represented ourselves well. In the last two games we have given very, very little to the game, to each other and to the organization.

I think our guys can make (shots). We haven't made consistently. I think we could make.

You make less than half your free throws (actually 53.8 percent) and 10-for-47 from the 3-point line, and this is great basketball. (Rockets forward Tracy) McGrady was the only one to make a 3 for the West.

You should never play at home on the second night of back-to-backs. Your home fans deserve the best you can give them. If you need to, play all your back-to-backs on the road, and never on national TV. They've done that, and sometimes the basketball is not the best.

If you watch him, he's anything but that type of player. That's how everybody wants to make him out to be. He's a low-turnover guy. He's sound. And yet, people still want to label him as that kind of guy. Maybe he can do that stuff. But he doesn't play like 'the Professor' out there.

That was by far the most passionate that McGrady has played in some time. I thought he was off the charts tonight, just very assertive on offense, vocal, on the board, defensively - I just thought he was great.

I thought (McGrady) was doing that right before he was hurt, being very aggressive and assertive but more efficient, and getting Yao more shots so that we can shoot a percentage that can win in this league.

He's very comfortable in his own skin, ... That's his personality. When you're true to self like that, it comes across well.

As much as I loved the team last year and still do, when you lose in the first round (of the playoffs) you have to make some moves. It's all about the results we get. Hopefully, we're going to get some good results.

Has Father Time totally caught up to him Dikembe has definitely slowed down from last year to this year and whether he can turn back the clock remains to be seen.

Well, it's been my history with him when he goes out of the game, he's sat out in the past. I don't think he takes himself out lightly.

(With their) team speed, in general, they cause us some problems. When they play both point guards ( Chris Paul and Speedy Claxton ) together it makes it doubly difficult to try and keep them out of the lane, because you've got two guys who are trying to catch-and-go or pick-and-roll, multiple pick-and-rolls.
