Gregg Williams Quotes (42 Quotes)

We were hoping they would keep it our way. They said Plummer was trying to put it away. Our guys in the coaches box thought there was a 50-50 chance it would be upheld by the replay review. But we had other opportunities. You can't say it was that one play.

Remember last year 'Gregg, you can't stop the run with that defensive line.' 'Gregg, these guys can't rush the passer.' I don't know why I didn't cut my wrist and lay in a hot tub of water. Every one of them played with an attitude.

Joe Gibbs wants his team to be physical. Every single meeting that Joe has in front of this team he talks about how we're going to win these physical battles 'I don't care what else happens in this ballgame, we're going to be physical.' And it's nice to see us playing that way, especially at the end of the season.

People look for me to be the spokesman too much, and I'm not. That's in deference to him. I've been there. I understand. He needs to do most of the talking because he's in the Hall of Fame, and I'm not.

There's a fine line between hope and belief. But he brings belief. All of us became better coaches the second that deal was cut.

I told him we can get David Copperfield if we want a magic act. He needs to make sure the damn ball gets back there every time like it's supposed to. We're not keeping him just for his ability to do tricks and entertain the guys.

My own parents wish maybe I would use different adjectives at times. But there's also kind of a feeling that I have to get in the gutter because some of them have lived in the gutter. But I don't take pride in that.

I want to be a head coach again. But the big deal is I love being here with Joe. I think it's a fantastic thing. People keep on trying to talk about me leaving here, and I have no plans on doing that. I love what I'm doing.

We're excited about the opportunity to get him back out there going full go. He's had a good week of practice and really has had a pretty solid training camp when you talk to the trainers. Selfishly, yeah, I'm excited to see him in the best condition since I've been here.

I have a lot of respect for Drew and that family, ... He's a class guy, and I think it's ironic that he got rejuvenated again. He played very, very well last week. I saw it on film and had a big smile on my face. Any time you've got a 140 quarterback rating, I know we've got our work cut out for us. He's got a big arm and when he's hot he is really hot. So we're playing against a much, much better quarterback this week, and a better football team, so defensively we've got our work cut out for us.

Sometimes the idea of a blitz can be almost as good as the blitz itself. We pressured Bledsoe on seven of the first 10 snaps. I knew Bill Parcells was going to over-commit to protecting his quarterback, and leave more people in to block. So we started showing pressure and not bringing it, making the quarterback feel by the way we lined up, 'Here they come.' And then we'd drop back, and he'd wind up getting upset and throwing the ball away.

Bell's fourth-and-inches run for a touchdown and his 55-yard touchdown run when the Broncos weren't even trying to score are the killer plays, the plays that make coaches sleep on sofas four nights a week. On the fourth-and-inches Bell touchdown run, the Redskins had Bell trapped for at least a one-yard loss. They clearly had the perfect defense called to stop him. We knew what the play was, ... We had guys calling out the play at the line.

We've practiced in all kinds of weather. Today, it's almost exactly the weather that we're expecting to have on game day. That's good.

I figured he would be trying to make fun of me somehow.

The quickest way to stop an offense is to get to the quarterback. You can play better in coverage when you can make sure the quarterback is unsettled. We didn't do as good a job in it last time. So that's the task at hand.

It happened right behind my back. I was driving home when someone called me and told me what happened. Then I saw the replays a thousand times. I told myself if I were ever an NFL coach I would never, ever let something like that happen.

Everybody's super-smart. I wonder why anyone ever makes a mistake out there.

If you could have those two runs back. But you can't. Normally, we take those plays away. We cannot allow those long runs on defense. We've got to finish those tackles. We did so many things well that we thought we had to do to take away a very good running game. Those plays are going to be hard to stomach.

Travis Henry has a rib contusion. Today it's better than it was yesterday. We'll take a look at it and see how it is on Wednesday. We'll just kind of monitor that about every couple of days and see how much progress he's making.

I love coaching. As a head coach sometimes, you don't get a chance to do it as much. But I won't do it that way the next time. I'll coach one side of the ball. No doubt about it.

He doesn't have a lot of sympathy for that position when you played nine, 10 years in the league in that Jim Brown era he played in.

Physically, we're stouter at the point of attack then we were at any time last year. We've just had a few runs that popped.

I try to keep that game out of my mind as much as possible, but as you can imagine, it's a big part of the tradition here. It wasn't until I had been on the sideline as the Bills coach two or three times that I quit thinking about it.

And our people were way ahead. A couple weeks before the announcement coming out (that he would start), we assessed and thought he was playing pretty good.

He's amazing, and his family background is amazing. What he has overcome already in life is really heart-wrenching. I know this This team loves him. He's the type of guy who really adds to the chemistry of a football team. People can't get enough of him and what he can do with his magic.

We knew that was what they are going to do. They spread it out. They put pressure on you with speed. That's what they've been doing since they've had this run of success, but I thought we would be would be able to make them one-dimensional.

As a defense, we've got to make them earn what they get a lot harder than what we did the last time.

With a year under his belt, he feels more at ease. He's not there yet -- he's not a finished product by any means -- but safeties coach Steve Jackson's done a tremendous job of bringing him up to speed in a short amount of time. I've never changed my opinion that he's the best kid I've ever coached, athletically, and I take it real personal in making sure that he matures in the right way as a football player. He's got to take some huge steps here in year two, but when you go back over time in this league, that's usually when the great ones really make a big jump. He's primed to do that.

We are ecstatic to have a coach with the caliber and experience of Jerry Gray joining our staff. Obviously, I'm familiar with Jerry from our previous years together and know that he's a great fit for our defense. He adds a new dynamic to our coaching staff and will help us continue to be one of the top defenses in the National Football League.

This is what he does best, play football. I thought it was important for the young guys to see him here, see him taking charge in the huddle. It's very valuable for him to show the young guys how important it is to be here, to be working.

Chris has come a long way in the short amount of time that we've worked with him.

I thought Danny did a remarkable job last year, ... with so many injuries on the defensive side of the ball and how they impacted him. He did an unbelievable job of just getting guys ready to go week in and week out, and we're deeper now than we were at this time last year.

I want to be a head coach again. I think I'll have the opportunity again. But that's not the most important thing. It's what am I doing, where is it at and who's it with I really like what I'm doing. I really like where I'm at and I really, really like who it's with. I've got just about everything I want right now.

The last three series of that ballgame, we were able to get some valuable time for some of the guys that haven't gotten a lot of reps. We were able to divide up the reps. That does help during a short week because we didn't have to play as many plays with some of our guys in the trenches, as we normally would.

Joe is a very strong point-of-attack person. More importantly, there is a tremendous confidence in the guys who play around him when he is in the game. Everyone knows you can trust him with maximum effort on every snap.

He's one of those rare backs that has the patience, speed and power-the whole package-put together. We're going to have to do a good job of tackling and swarming the ball carrier because he's not a guy that's easy to bring down in one-on-one situations.

Renaldo really pushes people around up front and he plays tremendously hard. He does a lot of things behind the scenes. There's a reason why our linebackers make a lot of plays. There's a reason why our linebackers run and hit as much as they do. Renaldo understands.

From the day that Joe Gibbs walked in here, he had their trust because of what he had accomplished in the past.

Whether you call it a low-grade separation or a contusion, he practiced every day. He won't get treatment for it. He blocks out pain. He plays through it. It's a testament to his toughness as a football player.

It's not about the chase of being a head coach. ... I really like what I'm doing, and I really like where I'm at, and I really, really like who it's with.

other than that, everyone is cool. People take it for what it's worth. We're having fun, we're trying to win. Whatever it takes to win. The people in the locker room get excited.

He's doing better. He's improving. I think he's got a real good team attitude and as he improves, he'll play more, ... But right now, we're playing as well as we can play with the people that we are playing with and the guys that have put the most time in. There could be a chance -- maybe it might spring out this week.
