Geno Auriemma Quotes on Success (10 Quotes)

They say you really don't understand what winning is. You really don't appreciate what winning is until you've had your share of losing. I think the opposite is also true. I think you can't quite fathom how much losing hurts when you have had as many chances to win, that we had, over the years.

I'm not saying it in a whiny way. I'm not saying woe is us. I'm telling our team that if we win the regular season, it's a hell of an accomplishment. Next year, we'll have all those teams at home. That won't be fair either.

They say you don't appreciate winning until you've had your share of losing. But you don't fathom how much losing hurts after all the winning you've done over the years. We played almost well enough to win. We played heroically. But Duke was too good for us to beat tonight.

The more you look around the NCAA Tournament, you see a lot of teams that had a lot of success and had a lot of trouble sustaining it. One of the things I'm happiest about is that we've been able to sustain it. Ultimately, that's going to be whether or not you were great. We've been able to do that. That's a long time, 13 years.

Pitt has a chance to be really good. They have a great facility. They are located in an area that is really good for high school basketball. The hardest part is winning, especially being in such a tough league. But they are winning and scoring a lot of points. People will notice. The men's program has done just that. Pittsburgh is a city that likes winners.

I'm glad that she's been patient enough and not kind of succumb to what a lot of coaches succumb to. Which is at the first sign of success they jump up to what they think is a greener pasture -- a big-time job somewhere else. But she's been patient enough to kind of build something that's going to be long lasting.

You would like to lay the foundation, like you would with a house, and the success of your team depends on what you build those 22 practice days. Last year, we were never able to get after it because of those situations. I don't see that as an issue right now, cross your fingers.

So, yeah, I'm going to try to win the national championship next year. But I'm not going to kill myself doing it. I'm not going to kill my players either. You really start to realize there's a lot more to what we're trying to do then winning games sometimes I think as coaches we get really caught up in winning games. Now that I look back, I'm going to try to take a different spin on it, and try to look at things differently.

I think players sometimes dont understand fully the amount of responsibility on their shoulders. As a senior, you have to take on that responsibility every day -- practice, games, travel, locker room, you name it. I think in the Big East tournament, they really, really, really did that.
