He hasn't thrown the ball exceptionally well in the last two weeks, but he's thrown the ball well at times. And we've known since Day 1 that it's the consistency we've got to find with him.

They know what they're looking for. Regardless if Dan was here today or not, I had a job to do to convince them that I'm the right guy. Dan being in there, how big of an influence that will be, I don't know.

There's a tremendous upside to David Carr. There is a process in this business as a quarterback. You don't just hop in there and be successful from the get-go. It takes time...

The number one thing you need to do to get things going is to have aspirations and to have a standard. My dream is to see this city win a championship someday.

He's been one of the best centers in the league when he's been healthy. We're not worried about his health. He brings us the kinds of things we're looking for as far as toughness and leadership.

He's a tremendous athlete, and as coaches in this league, you look for guys who can bail you out, so to speak. Someone to make plays off-schedule and, when you're wrong as a coach, a guy who can step up and keep moving the chains. Vince is an extremely gifted young man. The plays he can make off-schedule are probably second to none.

I've been away for a long time. Denver became my home, but I've got strong ties there, my family and friends and I have tremendous passion for the Houston franchise, just being from there.

It is a long process. We're going to get a great player. I don't plan on picking here again.

Reggie Bush is a very confident young man who believes in himself. Vince Young is a tremendous athlete. I think he's going to be a great player. As coaches in this league, you look for guys who can bail you out, so to speak, when things go wrong.

To be honest, even though we'll watch them work out Sunday, the first thing I'm thinking is going back and watching tapes.

Oh, yeah, I was a worrier when I was a player. So I don't really tell players not to worry. I tell them to study, to do the work and just play.

It's a great day. ... It's an awesome opportunity for me and my family. First off, we've got a lot to do.

Instead of assuming we're OK here or there, we didn't assume anything. We just stopped and started over in everything we do.

I'll find a way to make him successful because it's in him. I'm a David Carr fan. I like the skills he has. There is no reason that David shouldn't be a successful quarterback.

I can't tell you how much it means to a new staff to have a veteran like Steve. He was very unselfish last season when he moved from center to guard. We watched film of every play last season, and he just played so darn hard on all of them. Steve means a lot to what we hope to accomplish this season.

One of the things that impresses me about him is the way his teammates gravitate to him, which I think is important for a player at that position. You could see a little of that today. He handles himself real well.

I have no idea. We'll get a good player. I know that.

That is great for the state of Texas. Growing up here I know that is always a big game. That will be exciting. They have a fine, fine football team. I know in Denver last year we had a tremendous game with them on Thanksgiving Day.

I look forward to working with David. As long as he knows that's the direction we want to head, I know he'll do his part. I know he's a great kid, a great young man. And that's all you can ask for - a great kid that's willing to work.

People have heard me say I don't think I've ever seen anyone have a camp like Mike did. It was important to him to play, and he stayed focused on that.

As an organization, you have to develop expectations. You develop those over a period of time. It's the players and coaches you bring in. Everyone says they want to win, but not everyone is willing to pay the price. You have to get guys willing to do that.

In this league, those four or five plays a year are the difference in a team being 8-8 and 12-4. I think this year, with this team, there is a confidence someone's going to make those plays.

I look at what we do and what we teach and see him fitting into that very quickly. He can make plays off schedule and in this league, as a coach, you're not calling the perfect play all the time. When you don't, you want a kid who can go out there and keep you on the field and make things happen. That's something he possesses.

I'm going to make (Carr) successful, I'm confident of that. He's a great kid. We have to go to work and get it done... I'm a fan of his. There is no reason he can't succeed. That's my job, my challenge.

It's easy for us to see (Flanagan) as a player, but Mike knew him as a person. So really Mike was, I want to say the closer in the deal. He was the one with the relationship that gave us the best opportunity to get the kid. No doubt about that.

Mike's going to make a decision over the next three or four days whether he wants to come back and coach this season. I'm hoping to be the first one to know that, so I'll let you guys know Monday.
