    We got a lot of work on special teams done today. I think we're really better and more advanced than we were last year at this time.

    We have a lot of families in Gulfport and Biloxi, and obviously we have a lot of family down in New Orleans. We're really sensitive to that. With our program, family comes first and we're going to take care of these young men.

    Before three years ago, we'd go to play Oregon or Washington and there'd be a guy out there making 10 or 12 tackles -- and he was from downtown L.A.. The key has been recruiting and evaluating talent.

    If I could create a nose tackle, it would be him.

    We made a couple of big plays, but we're still not consistent enough to beat a team that's going to score 31 points on us.

    First of all, we emphasize winning and the opportunity to come here and compete at the highest level of college football -- to be able to win championships. Second of all, the education that we offer here. It's a private institution with great educational opportunities. Third, and probably the most important, is the Trojan family. Once you're a Trojan, you're a Trojan for life. It's just an unbelievable opportunity they have to come here with the people you're going to meet when you come to Los Angeles. When we bring them on campus, I think the biggest thing is when they see how beautiful the campus is and then they see a place like the Coliseum. It's a great atmosphere for a young man.

    I was surprised how much the defense dominated out there today. The offense controlled most of yesterday's practice, but today we got more from the defense.

    We need as many (freshmen) that are able to play. Realistically, we're probably going to play at least half of that class. Some positions we needed to get better at. Others we needed to improve our depth.

    We had a good practice today. We went through every special situation you can think of. We concentrated on sudden change and overtime. It was needed and good work. We just wanted a practice where we covered all the bases and all the things that can happen in a football game.

    I like his motor. He plays with great intensity. He is obviously very strong and very quick. He has made a tremendous improvement from last year. He understands the defense and has showed a lot more leadership. He is setting the tempo this year.

    It's fantastic. It's unique, powerful and sleek, and it will represent the university in a first-class manner.

    He was picking it up and was given just enough time for the routes to come open. I don't know if you're going to totally stop him.

    They came to play. They were playing with fire. We put them in bad situations and they just kept on playing. They were able to make the big play and cause turnovers.

    We thought we had to get bigger, and better, on the offensive line, and we did.

    I think we need to get back to the basic fundamental parts of our offense that I brought with us from USC. I was able to spend some time in California with Coach Carroll and those guys. Hopefully we can work out some of the kinks we have on offense.

    We needed to get pressure on the quarterback, and his sack was a big play. We need him to be more consistent and continue to play like he was at the end.

    It was a better day today. We missed a lot of balls on the second team. But a lot of those guys are not ready to play. Dan has a good passing game. They pick up your blitzes. I thought they did a good job today.

    It's part of football, it's where we're at and we have to learn from this loss. We have to take the positives and move on and not dwell on the negatives.

    The key to our recruiting class is Brent Schaeffer. He's going to be our quarterback. There will be no quarterback controversy at Ole Miss.

    We're going to take care of these young men the best way we can because some of them have not been able to reach their families. One way to help them is to keep them focused on getting ready for the game.

    Sometimes it takes time. But he caught some big balls today and made some big plays.

    To give our offense a shot we needed to throw the ball and we feel he is better at throwing.

    Art Kehoe is a fantastic addition to our staff. He brings energy and great passion for football to our program. He's an outstanding recruiter and has coached some of the best lines in collegiate football.

    I had to do a big sell job. He's a tremendous player with the heart of a lion. But he might have been the biggest recruit we had. He just loves Ole Miss.

    Physically he's ready to play, but mentally he's not. Patrick Willis is going to have to play most of the snaps. Hopefully we can spell him once in a while, but Robert's not ready to run our whole defense yet.

    Michael is such a great talent, so big and fast and strong. We need some help in the middle of our line, and I think he can bring it to us. I feel comfortable that we can perhaps start him this week.

    I think that's going to be a great story, when we play each other.

    I prepared to handle it the best way I could for my team and for my school. And I thought I did that. I was really disappointed in the loss, but mostly disappointed in myself. By getting the team ready to play, it is my job to keep this ship steered right, and I am going to do that in a positive way. We will continue to build a championship program here.

    We worked on blocking punts today. They got a little better. Robert Lane scored on a fantastic catch in the back of the end zone today, and that's why he's at tight end. We want him to be a playmaker.

    He's the one that wanted to play end. And he has proven to me that he can play end.

    There's a big drop-off between our first- and second-team defense, especially up front.
