Bob Melvin Quotes on Time (21 Quotes)

The consensus was that you don't have to take it easy on this guy, just let him go out and play. Now there's a pecking order as to where he plays in a game . . . but everybody that's spent some time with him and knows him says this guy can handle just about anything.

Everybody that's been to this place knows it as the BOB. We won a World Series here, but almost every ballpark at some time or another changes now.

He's not getting the pitches we thought he would. He threw one-third of an inning last time. He was going to be a starter that second round, which would get him to the pitch counts that we're comfortable with. It hasn't happened, other than the first time, so far.

We've talked about it since last year. Hopefully at some point in time it evens out. We'd like to think it will.

It's a play where he's in between whether or not to try to stay on the base. Then at the last minute, he tries to come off and tag him at the same time. Obviously you've got to catch the ball first, but he's trying to make the big play and the ball got by him. You can't beat him up for it. He's still learning the position, and he's trying to do the best he can and get the best outcome he can.

You spend any time around him, he doesn't act, look anything like an 18-year-old kid. He's got a lot of savvy. You can tell he's been around a family and brother who's been in the big leagues. He handles himself very well.

We're kind of in that difficult line, where you still feel like you're in it. You still go out there and try to win every game, yet you have to look periodically at these other guys. It's not a real comfortable place to be, yet that's where we are and guys are going to get some days off from time to time.

The first time out, guys that were injured are just wanting to get through it and let it go. The second time, they're not worried about it anymore and they're just into their focus of getting ready for the season.

As much as has been said about us not having any heart and all this stuff, we've been battling all year. We could have quit a while ago, but we don't. We're not the type of team that is outwardly enthusiastic, and I think it sometimes might be misconstrued for no desire or whatever, but this is a team that could have called it in quite some time ago, and we're just not going to.

It's a results-based industry and we've given it some time and we just don't feel like we're getting the results.

Javy kept fighting out there. He gave up a bunch of hits but made good pitches when he had to and got us through six innings, which at the time, I didn't think he had a chance.

(Terrero) played a nice game yesterday. Unfortunately, he gets the highlight because of what happened. That wasn't what won or lost the game for us. One of the reasons we were in a position where we were at that time was because of Luis Terrero.

At some point in time we'll probably need to go to 12 pitchers. Whether we start the season with 12 or not remains to be seen.

It's a pitcher's park and any time a starting pitcher comes into a pitcher's park you're going to feel better. You don't feel like you have to be so fine with every pitch.

I don't think he's comfortable doing that. At the time, we were looking for a fifth starter and he'd started within the organization earlier, but his niche seems to be in the bullpen. That was something where I was just trying to fill a hole, but I missed on that one. Oscar is a bullpen guy.

He's not going back to the bench tomorrow. He's been great, quality at-bats every time.

I think he's ready. He's spent a lot of time here and has a great reputation in the organization. We think very highly of him.

We worked very well together. He seemed to know what my train of thought was most of the time.

If he was a starter, I'd be a little bit more concerned. He's a reliever and we've got plenty of time to get him ready.

We're still in a position where we don't think we're out of it. We haven't had a great year, but if you look at it, we're 6 12 games back at this point in time in the season and you still feel like you've got a chance.

This is a team that could have called it in quite some time ago. We just aren't going to, all the way to the end we won't.
