    The path of light and the path of darkness of materialism and ignorance are thought to be the world's two eternal paths.

    Those who are interested in self-realization, in terms of mind and sense control, offer the functions of all the senses, as well as the vital force (breath) , as oblations into the fire of the controlled mind.

    Work done with selfish motives is inferior by far to the selfless service or Karma-yoga. Therefore be a Karma-yogi, O Arjuna. Those who seek to enjoy the fruits of their work are verily unhappy because one has no control over the results.

    In My opinion, yoga is difficult for the one whose mind is not subdued. However, yoga is attainable by the person of subdued mind by striving through proper means.

    In this world there are two orders of being the perishable, separate creature and the changeless spirit. But beyond these there is another, the supreme Self, the eternal Lord, who enters into the entire cosmos and supports it from within. I am that supreme Self, praised by the scriptures as beyond the changing and the changeless. Those who see in me that supreme Self see truly. They have found the source of all wisdom, ... and they worship me with all their heart.

    Austerity of speech consists in speaking truthfully and beneficially and in avoiding speech that offends.

    Out of compassion I destroy the darkness of their ignorance. From within them I light the lamp of wisdom and dispel all darkness from their lives.

    For those who wish to climb the mountain of spiritual awareness, the path is selfless work. For those who have attained the summit of union with the Lord, the path is stillness and peace.

    He from whom all beings originate, and by whom all this universe is pervaded worshipping Him by performing one's natural duty for Him one attains perfection.

    By always keeping the mind fixed on the Self, the yogi whose mind is subdued attains peace of the Supreme nirvana by uniting with Me.

    Death in carrying out one's natural work is useful.


    I desire neither victory nor pleasure nor kingdom, O Krishna. What is the use of the kingdom, or enjoyment, or even life, O Krishna

    When the senses contact sense objects, a person experiences cold or heat, pleasure or pain. These experiences are fleeting they come and go. Bear them patiently.

    With whatever motive people worship Me, I reward them or fulfill their desires accordingly.

    Thus I heard this wonderful dialogue between Lord Krishna and Mahatma Arjuna, causing my hair to stand on end.

    The body is mortal, but the person dwelling in the body is immortal and immeasurable.

    After many births the wise ones resort (or surrender) to Me by realizing that everything is (a manifestation of) Brahman indeed. Such a great soul is very rare.

    The one who rejoices in the Self only, who is satisfied with the Self, who is content in the Self alone, for such a Self-realized person there is no duty.

    Of all that is material and all that is spiritual in this world, know for certain that I am both its origin and dissolution. There is no true superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.

    He who considers this Self as a slayer or he who thinks that this Self is slain, neither of these knows the Truth. For it does not slay, nor is it slain.

    Bear with me as a father to his son, as a friend to a friend, and as a husband to his wife, O Lord.
