    I was entrusted with the legacy of the franchise. I simply picked the best player in the country. If the Baltimore franchise was good enough for John Unitas, the greatest quarterback in the history of the league, it was good enough for John Elway.

But what set Unitas apart was the feeling you got in your heart when you saw him walk on the field, something that none of us are capable of defining or explaining, we just feel it. You knew he came to win. And, from the moment he walked into the locker room, you knew you had a better chance to win than the other guy. He was the toughest man I have ever known - physically and mentally.

    Johnny Unitas. He was so frustrating to play against. He was so frustrating for me to play against. I thought he could read my mind when I called the defenses. He was such a great leader.


    The Sixties and Seventies were the best times in the NFL, ... I covered Jim Brown, Gayle Sayers, Jurgenson, Unitas, Star and those great Packers teams. It was more fun than work.

    I always thought of him as a stoic, solid person, that I think was typical of that era of the 1950s, ... People came out of the war years with great hope and great faith in the future. Unitas sort of represented that.

    It's daunting. Obviously Elway is the guy I grew up watching, and Johnny Unitas, well, you could say it's a rich tradition. Those are big shoes high tops to fill. But it's a great opportunity. If I can live up to those guys, they'll be a lot of people happy, including myself.
