I used to stand outside the theater knowing the truant officer was looking for me. I would stand there 'til someone came along and then ask them to buy my ticket.
Too often we act - ask our schools to be truant officers, our teachers to be truant officers, because we're giving them children who have, you know, they're not ready to learn. And if they're not ready to learn by the third grade, they know they're behind.
Biting my truant pen, beating myself for spite 'Fool' said my muse to me, 'look in thy heart, and write.'

There aren't even truant officers any more. I deal with kids that don't come to school and why (they don't). It has a lot to do with family problems. That is the biggest change. The counselor must find out how to solve the problem. The truancy officer must connect with the community and understand family problems.
Maybe he's suffering from a case of jet lag. Is he suggesting that we be reduced to truant officers It seems to me to be a plan obsessed with power and control.
When kids are truant and they're brought back in, nothing is done. You say okay, fine you were truant. Then you go out and miss 10 more days. There have to be consequences,
They basically said that if I didn't show up for school they'd mark me present, they wouldn't send the truant officer after me. At 16 I enrolled in something called continuing education. Once a month I'd go out to Jamaica, but I didn't take it seriously.
