The fundamentalists, by 'knowing' the answers before they start (examining evolution), and then forcing nature into the straitjacket of their discredited preconceptions, lie outside the domain of science-or of any honest intellectual inquiry.
What I tried to do, as best I could, was keep a kind of balancing act in motion, ... I have my prejudices and politics and so-forth, but if I was going to err, I wanted to err in favor of the Christian conservatives, since it's not the world that I come from. Racism is just one part of the much bigger puzzle that the film offers.
