    There is natural ability and there is skill. There is an art to pitching. It's a skill position. It's not easy to throw quality pitches. It's not easy to throw the ball where you want to when you have that kind of velocity and that kind of movement. It boils down to being able to harness that stuff and throw it on the corners down in the zone. It's not easy to do. On a given day, Kip can do it. On another day, he can't do it.

    I study pitchers. I visualize pitches. That gives me a better chance every time I step into the box. That doesn't mean I'm going to get a hit every game, but that's one of the reasons I've come a long way as a hitter.

    I do tend to look at hitters, the way they swing at previous pitches and use that to my advantage. I just want to go out there and start attacking hitters and not necessarily give them the ability to think their way through an at-bat, just be in attack mode the whole time.


    Besides merely some pleasure that we get out of the combinations of pitches together and lines, I think that there is some satisfaction that we get in the fact of having this diffuse thing organized very concretely and put onto a frame and have it actually decided.
