But I say these things in an objective dispassionate manner because, you know, and I can't explain why, but being one of the greatest guitarists in the world simply is not very important to me.

After the Soft Boys I just didn't want to work with any more guitarists.
Pianists have the Van Cliburn competition and guitarists have a number of contests, as well, but the electric bass is such a young instrument, relatively speaking, that this sort of thing just hasn't happened until now. Victor and I have been talking about this for a couple of years because we go around the world and we bump in to people who just blow us away. They've been practicing for years on this stuff that nobody's ever heard. They might be well-known players or just hiding out in a practice room working on techniques we don't even known about.
Richard Lloyd of Television is one of my favorite guitarists. His mentor was Jimi Hendrix when he was just 14. Jimi was always pounding everything he knew into that kid.
I think initially people like Johnny Lang, they seemed to be a novelty at the time but nowadays there are so many blues guitarists.
When I began, the guitar was en-closed in a vicious circle. There were no composers writing for the guitar, be-cause there were no virtuoso guitarists.
I think a lot of modern day guitarists start off playing like Eddie van Halen, and they don't take the time to learn the basics.
I know many inferior guitarists who are very proud of the fact that they are as good as they are, when in fact they are only moderately good.
John Pizzarelli is one of the finest jazz guitarists around. He has performed and recorded with people like Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, James Taylor, Skitch Henderson, and The Manhattan Transfer, just to name a few. He's also been a guest on The Tonight Show and on Late Night with David Letterman. And not only is he a great guitarist, but he's an accomplished vocalist, as well. Anybody who knows jazz today knows about John Pizzarelli
He's one of the best jazz guitarists in the world, totally at the top of his game.
Well, 'Smoke on the Water' is a big, big part of my history and a big part of why I'm here and able to do what I do. I couldn't really ignore that, but at the same time, you have to recognize that a lot of those songs, like 'Smoke' , 'Child In Time' , 'Highway Star' , etc. are snapshots in time and cannot be improved. They are what they are. It would be foolish to try and recapture that magic, because you can't. So, what I did with 'Smoke on the Water' was to treat it respectfully, it's a fairly regular version, but use it as a showcase for some of the guitarists to work with. On there you have Jeff Healey , Steve Morse , Joe Satriani The talent there is incredible.
He's one of the all-time great guitarists, and worked wonders making guitars, and here he is still around, still playing and having this great award on his birthday.
There were some older guitarists on my side of town, and I got to know many of them.
Michael Sunday and I are the original members of the band. We first did it just for charities and benefit concerts. It was very ad-hoc, and before we knew it, we were really a band. We went through several drummers and guitarists before we were happy with the line up.
