Along the way, Baker had recorded with Bobby Robinson, who had also worked with Elmore James and was the first to put Gladys Knight and the Pips to vinyl. In 1968, when Marvin Gaye was looking for a new guitarist, he gave Robinson a call. Robinson recommended Baker, because I could do the blues ... and because I could read music.
