Having a credit card associated with a frequent-flier program is a real money maker. Typically, airlines charge the credit-card company one or two cents for each mile issued. That can equate to millions of dollars.
The frequent-flier programs really were extremely successful because they generated for the first time brand loyalty, which you never had before. It gives them the opportunity to charge a premium over the low-cost carriers.
The frequent-flier programs' glory days are over. It is time to 'spend down' on all the airlines. Wise consumers are already doing that.
That not only will make it less convenient for you to fly, it will mean less opportunity for you to cash in your frequent-flier miles. In the weeks and months to come, it can only get worse, not better.
They are just great, from the fact that they charge no penalties for changing a flight to their frequent-flier program. I know I sound like I work for them, but I swear I don't. I am just a big fan.
