Revenge is a common passion it is the sin of the uninstructed. The savage deems it noblebut the religion of Christ, which is the sublime civilizer, emphatically condemns it. Why Because religion ever seeks to ennoble man and nothing so debases him as revenge.
Law and religion are two forces which govern the conduct of men. At times they act as handmaids to each other. At other times they act as check and counter-check. Of the two forces, Law is personal while religion is impersonal. Law being personal it is capable of being unjust and iniquitous.
