Going to the Acolyte Festival was another way for us to participate in the global Episcopal community. We got to share the adventure with other churches in our diocese, but it also gave us the opportunity to be part of something much bigger and to enrich our young acolytes with the Episcopal culture from other American states.
From a social perspective, I am looking for friends, not acolytes.
There, it's possible that a less cozy Martha may surface, as she puts eager acolytes through their paces. And while it may make for more exciting television than yesterday's somewhat forced cheeriness, there's a greater danger in that, too ... She has to be careful not to come across as too tough or too mean.
Prominence is cool, but when the delusion kicks in it can be a drag. Especially if you choose to surround yourself with friends and not acolytes.
