He lay in the darkness and waited.
And longed for the light,
And wondered which Heaven had fated,
Should carry his fight.
So he dwelt on the time that was nearing,
Till he hated the hour that was nearing,
The lights and the crowds and the cheering,
Oh long was that night I
He thought of the blood and the bruises,
The heat and glare,
The miserable that loses,
Helped back to him chair,
With eyes that stared blind at the ceiling,
With a mouth tightly closed and conceiling,
The terrors and hate he was feeling,
He wrestled with fear
He slept in the cold of the Dawning
And dreamt it was done,
But when he awoke in the morning,
It hadn’t begun.
He fought like a fool and a coward.
By ducking his head,
His seconds said nothing but glowered:
” Attack him instead “
But he slipped and he ducked and he tarried
To lead or attack and he parried,
Till out of the ring he was carried :
” I knew it ” he said.
