1 – Wind Of The Morn
Ere the ghostly grey of morning,
Can be seen among the dells,
All the cattle on the hill-side
Fill the air with tinkling bells.
Then from seas deserted, cheerless,
Whence a wailing cry is born,
To the cliffs and dewy meadows,
Comes the herald of the Dawn.
And the trees stand cold and silent,
In the grey uncertain light,
And the Dawn, that waited patient,
Scorns the shadows of the Night.
Herald of the day’s awakening,
Tarry still, your journey stay,
Tell again, with eyes of mischief,
Of the coming of the Day.
2 – Wind Of The Noon-Day
Listless Vagabond of summer,
Gliding aimless o’er the Earth,
Bringing life and love and laughter
From the Sun, that gave you birth.
Swooping idly over meadows,
Over fields of swaying wheat,
To the clamour of a city,
Deep in dust and throbbing heat.
Lingering long in misty wood-lands,
Till the creeping shadows fall,
And the Woman of the Evening
Casts her mantle over all.
Fare you well, O Wind of Noon-Day,
Vain and idle though you be,
Fair and fickle, caring nothing
For the things you hear and see.
3 – Wind Of The Evening
You have witnessed many sorrows,
On your flight across the skies,
As you chase the silver twilight
When the golden sunset dies.
And you ruffle glassy rivers
Winding down through sloping plains.
And I hear your stealthy whisper
In the quiet of the lanes.
Over Hill and over hollow,
Shunning wide the lighted towns,
Faster still, the twilight deepens,
Till you whistle o’er the downs.
Then the sea, whose waves are dancing
In the lingering yellow light,
Till you rest, alone and weary,
On the tumbling waves of night.
4 – Night Wind
From the Darkness and the Silence
Of the bosom of the night,
Steals a moaning and a sighing,
When you start your lonely flight.
Then you whisper in the forests
‘Mid the dark and solemn trees,
And you wander in the moonlight,
Over strange and silent seas.
And you hear the childish secrets
Of this old, bed-ridden Earth,
And you smile at Love and Murder,
And the mystery of Birth.
Soon you seek again the Silence,
That no human murmur mars
But you’ll cherish all those secrets,
in the Light behind the stars.
