My Shepherd, who my soul didst keep
Last night, whilst I was fast asleep,
From the grim wolf, beneath thy wing —
Thy praises, from my heart, I’ll sing!
Close to thy breast, thou didst me place,
And in thine arms didst me embrace,
Thou ease and rest to me didst give,
And I will thank thee, whilst I live!
Thou hind’red’st Satan, to destroy —
Thou hind’red’st villains, to annoy —
From fires and storms thou didst me keep,
And suff’red’st nought to break my sleep.
Thy name, O Christ! be ever blest,
Who dost protect me, whilst I rest —
All glory be ascrib’d to thee,
Who such refreshment givest me.
