The devil must be smiling
as we wake before dawn
changing Christmas into shopping
clawing for a sale
Losing sight of the Christ-child
the miracle of His coming
lost in misdirected frenzy
rushing here and there
Satan must revel
in the folly of this season
where once the manger lay
now endless commotion
The stillness of that night
the angels on high
the shepherds watching on the hill
the child in its mother’s arms
Oh let us return
in the humbleness of Advent
waiting for our King
His birth that had been foretold
