Down by the river,
we played, dreamed, explored
alone and together,
bikes left by the rock piles,
Climbing, hiking, claiming land
wading, splashing, damming
the river, catching tiny fish
dirty water, runoff water,
scales of gray muck
undulating in the current
slippery under foot
Rafts, bombs (well rocks actually),
testing the mettle
of the GI Joe’s
their armies across
the wide stream
Generals, scouts,
Lewis and Clarks
in the making
being kids, being boys
down by the river
