A line of barges by a river’s brink,
Moored to the side and straining at their ropes —
So wait the aged, and watch their youthful hopes
Slip softy past them. Mindfully they think
On all the ventures of Life’s crowded rink,
Where each amid the Darkness feebly gropes!
Seeking a pathway and with each one copes
Striving for mastery lest himself should sink.
The whistle sounds and forth again they go,
And soon the open sea will meet their gaze,
Think you, amid that waste and tireless flow,
They will recall Life’s wondrous toiling maze,
Will they recall the daffodils that grow
Along the borders of those sinuous ways?
