LIKE Daniel, when among the lions cast,
Like Jonah, in the whale imprison’d fast,
I lifted to the Lord my voice on high,
And, from above, he quickly heard my cry.
The rav’nous lions’ fury he restrain’d,
The whale’s enormous jaw with ease he rein’d,
The serpent’s sateless appetite he quell’d,
Short’ned his claws, and his attacks repell’d.
Ye heav’ns above, earth, water, fire, and air,
Ye boist’rous winds, with ev’ry creature fair,
Your great Creator ever praise and bless,
Who has reliev’d his servant from distress.
