O’er the woods on the slope of yon mist-laden hill,
The blood-coloured sun has set,
And cool is the wind from those wood-lands still
From those woods where the sun has set.
Over hills, over forests of whispering trees,
Afar it is setting yet,
And sorrow and pain fly away on the breeze
O’er those woods where the sun has set.
Soon the shadows of evening, quiet heralds of night’
Creep soft, for the sun has set . . .
A stream bubbles loud in the silvery light
Through the woods where the sun has set.
