Deign now, O Lord! thy servant to release,
And from this prison let me part in peace;
Yet, ere I’m from th’ incumb’ring flesh set free,
Let my blest eyes thy great salvation see!
Come is the day! come is the dreadful hour!
Come is the time, determin’d by thy pow’r!
Come is the moment! come the very end,
And to escape it, I can ne’er pretend!
The race is ended, which I was to run,
The last of all my days is almost done —
The conflict’s o’er — I just have reach’d the goal:
Receive, O Lord! — receive to thee, my soul!
Like thy first martyr, in the pangs of death,
To thee, O Christ! my spirit I bequeath:
Come then, come quickly, O my Saviour-God,
And take me with thee to thy blest abode!
