RICHARD RYDER! Awake! Awake!
Let’s go a-ridin’ to-day;
Fra’ t’ risin’ of t’ sun, to t’ settin’ of moon-
Up an’ away an’ away.
I’ll ride Jerry, he knaws my voice,
Thoo’lt master t’ mettlesome bay;
We’ll mak’ for off, ere t’ village stirs
An’ folk have summat to say!
Up to t’ dale-head wheer snow-bairns skip
An’ t’ liltin’ river’s in spate,
Up ower meadows wheer mist-hounds meet
At t’ foot o’ Herendon Gate.
Larn me different calls o’ birds
At wing ower Merriegill brae,
An’ t’ music o’ fire on Morrowby Fell,
Wheer noisy wind-childer play;
Finnd me a track to t’ girt Moor o’ Time,
Up by a brant moon-ray,
Ride wi’ me ower breet hedges o’ Heaven,
Richard Ryder, for aye!
