Labor Day is a significant federal holiday that all Americans are looking forward to every first Monday of September, and this year, it falls on September 7th.
This three-day weekend holiday is a timely respite for all hard working Americans to take time off from their toils and take a very well-earned rest for their weary minds and bodies.
The very first celebration of Labor Day was done on September 5th, 1882, a Tuesday. The Central Labor Union celebrated it in New York City.
Soon after that, many states followed suit until President Grover Cleveland declared on June 28th, 1894, that every first Monday of September hence would be set aside for the Labor Day Holiday. That was done to ensure that we have a lovely long weekend holiday to spend with our families and friends.
It is also noteworthy that the holiday falls on the last week or so before the kids go back to school for an entirely new school year. So, in essence, it also unofficially marks the end of the traditional summer season and usher in the autumn or fall season.
The event is usually celebrated with parades, outings, barbeques, picnics, swimming parties, etc. For others, it is a time for some house cleaning, storing the old summer stuff, and bringing out the autumn garments.
Labor Day holiday has so much in store for us. Depending on your home state, there could be garage sales, back-to-school sales, state fairs, fireworks, carnivals, and concerts.
In Sports, this holiday denotes the fall season for the NFL, NCAA, and the NASCAR and Darlington races.
Fashion-wise, Labor Day is also traditionally the last day to wear seersucker and white apparel.
Festivities and revelries aside, Labor Day is a time to reflect on the courage, perseverance, and resourcefulness of the American worker. No matter how modest a job or work is, dignity and pride always embody the spirit of American Laborer. The exceptional qualities of diligent Americans have made what the country is today.
The collective efforts have supported the US both in times of struggle and opportunity. It has allowed the country to participate as pioneers in the Industrial Revolution. It has seen the country through two terrible World Wars and other trials. Determination combined with sheer ingenuity has made it possible for the country to send men to the moon and lead in every other endeavor in science, particularly space exploration.
What is better than having an honest, decent job that enables you to raise a happy, healthy family? What is more glorious than to have pride in giving your “blood, sweat, and tears” and be fairly compensated for it? Surely, nothing would be more satisfying than being able, during your waning years, to look back at all your accomplishments and say, “I did that!”
In the end, work has allowed every one of us to fulfill that most coveted goal of “living the American dream.” To help you achieve that dream and enjoy the fruits of your perseverance during this beautiful American weekend holiday, here are some of the best Labor Day quotes listed below.
