Gary Scelzi Quotes (20 Quotes)

We just deal with the weather as it comes. Theres nothing we can do about it, so Im not one to play much into it, Scelzi said. Thats all Mike Neffs problem, its not my problem. My problem is to hit the gas on time and keep it in the groove, and hopefully the win lights will come on.

Bring it on. It's time to start changing things around.

This is a must-win race, ... Then we've got to go to Pomona (Calif.) and win there. The games are over. We need to do our thing and get it done and let everyone else worry about us.

If the weather really does cool down this weekend in Dallas it will be great, ... Even if it doesn't, that's OK, because we can run in the heat.

We've done well when we've had four qualifying runs in the past. We'll see what tomorrow brings. No one knows. It's going to be a hell of a race tomorrow, first and second round.

My guys are real hungry, ... We know we can't make mistakes. (But) we can't let (the chase) affect what we do. You just have to run it (the car) the way you would run it, like it doesn't matter. Otherwise, you will make mistakes. I've learned that if it's meant to be, it's meant to be.

To win a Funny Car championship racing the guys we've had to race this year is just incredible. My big concern was not letting my crew down because they mean so much to me. I am just numb right now because this is so different than the other three. I've never had so much pressure where everything meant so much.

Running late tonight gave us a chance to run in perfect conditions, ... I know we won't have conditions like this tomorrow but we did learn that this racetrack can hold a lot more than we've been giving it.

Mike has just been so good from the beginning. When I first started with Schumacher, that's who I wanted. I didn't know if I was going to get hired or not, but I told Don Schumacher that if I had a choice, I wanted to work with Mike Neff because he's such a level guy. He doesn't show his emotion a lot. Sometimes we have to beat him up to get him to beat on the hood and get me jacked up. All these great crew chiefs like my crew chief because he doesn't get excited. He doesn't brag, he doesn't get in anybody's face. He just wants to run with them.

This just shows how deep the talent level in Funny Car is, ... No one is intimidated by John Force or the Schumacher cars. The field is deep.

(Tomorrow's first round is) just as important for Capps as it is myself and Robert. (The MoparOakley Dodge Stratus) has been the most consistent, the quickest, or right next to the quickest every single run. Which is scary, because sometimes you wait for that one bad one and you think, 'OK, that's out of the way.' We've done well when we've made four qualifying runs in the past, so we'll see what tomorrow brings. No one knows. It's gonna be a hell of a race tomorrow.

This track is really good when it's cold. And it's pretty darn good when the sun's out. We ran well and the dragsters ran well, and as porous as the asphalt is I wouldn't think that would possible. But the NHRA has done a hell of a job.

Somebody is going to have to break away sooner or later, but anybody can throw anybody off here, and that's been the case over the years, but now they're not playing favorites. They're mowing me off, they're mowing John (Force) off, Robert (Hight) got sawed off the first round of Sonoma. You don't know whose going to do it who's holding the loaded gun. Nobody can break away and get the clean air and get away from everybody. It could still happen, but right now one through four is right there, and even fifth place is right there. With six races left, the whole idea is if somebody jumps up with three in a row, now we're the ones chasing the rabbit ... There's no dominating anywhere.

Chicago is one of those race tracks that you love to go to. It's just incredible. The weather should be outstanding.

It is exciting, ... One, because it's Funny Car, and, two, to dethrone any one of Force's cars that have had such a command on the Funny Car championship over the years is a big thing.

But I have a feeling it's going to go down to Pomona (at the Auto Club Finals in November). I don't see anyone backing down.

My mother and father-in-law came over last night, and I said to them, Finally, on Sunday at Reading (Pa. where he padded his lead from one point to 26) I said to myself, You know what You're not nervous, you like this stuff, you love this pressure,

It's always harder to defend. I never thought we'd have the start that we had. Effort equals results, except in this case, because we put a lot of effort into this program over the winter and every week and we're just not seeing the results.

The right lane has a pretty big bump in it. Historically, it's been a one-lane race track, normally the left lane. So, I don't know if they've made any improvements or not. I haven't heard anything, but I guess we'll find out. Lane choice is critical here.

I'm not trying to make this Funny Car championship chase so close,
