    We actually had a barbecue that Sunday. I was out in the garden while a lot of the other blokes were inside watching the cricket on TV. Every now and then someone would rush out and shout, 'Another wicket's gone.' I was struck by how weird it all seemed. I really was no longer a Test cricketer. I was just some ordinary guy looking after his barbecue while this momentous battle unfolded at Trent Bridge.

I'm the kind of guy that could sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs or the side order of gravy fries I want high cholesterol. I would eat bacon and butter and buckets of cheese. Okay I want to smoke Cuban cigars the size of Cincinnati in the nonsmoking section. I want to run through the streets naked with green Jell-O all over my body reading Playboy magazine. Why Because I might suddenly feel the need to. Okay, pal

    It looks pretty close. Lighting is our biggest concern. But you can see they've made a lot of improvements. You can always bring in portable seats. The main thing is the atmosphere. You want people to come out early and do things like barbecue with their families. We want to make it a good atmosphere for college baseball.

    I think we're in a significant inventory correction in the economy. What's happening now is people who make cars and barbecue grills are getting their inventories in line, then they're getting their product in line. But the number of cars and barbecue grills being bought is still rising,





    We put on our jeans the Saturday before Christmas and cook smoked barbecue ribs and chicken for the employees. My grandfather did all the cooking and my cousin and I do it the same way.

    Centuries ago, sailors on long voyages used to leave a pair of pigs on every deserted island. Or they'd leave a pair of goats. Either way, on any future visit, the island would be a source of meat. These islands, they were pristine. These were home to breeds of birds with no natural predators.     And we're going to have lots of wonderful food, I know everyone loves that. We have a group of ladies from the Mennonite community that will have wonderful things for breakfast -- pastries, baked goods. We will also have barbecue plates and food available both days for lunches,

    People who would put ketchup in the sauce they feed to innocent children are capable of most anything. Let the word go forth from this time and place that we, the Eastern North Carolina purveyors of pure barbecue, will not be roadkill for our western kin.
