Steve Mariucci Quotes (119 Quotes)

We agreed to disagree. In my mind, it is a catch. It is water over the dam, but I thought Marcus had possession with his hands before he slid out of bounds. There was no ruling of a bobble and I thought he clearly had control of it with his hands before he tucked it away and slid out of bounds. Their view may be a little bit different. But you can go around and around until the cows come home and it's not going to change anything.

I think we're on course to do that, ... It's time to do things.

I mentioned it to him when he was back home. I said, 'Do you have any interest in coming back' And he goes, 'Absolutely.' He wants to pursue coaching, and this is a great opportunity for him.

I told the players, 'I'm going to keep 85 percent of this the same. Allow me 15 percent wrinkles.' So every time we'd do something, Steve Young would go, 'Was that the 15 or was that the 85 What is that You're going over. It's almost 20 (percent),'

I was really pleased with how we responded to a game like Monday night's. It was as good a fourth preseason game as I've been around.

We're just going to have to pack these guys in ice for a couple days and see where they wind up,

I freshened up on both teams' players and personnel, and you try to prepare and learn about the different players. But there wasn't a lot of preparation, and I had no idea what the script would look like.

That is always a concern of a coach or a team, ... You try to minimize finger pointing. These guys are hard-working and they care so much. I'd be lying to you if I didn't say that frustration can set in on a team that loses close games like this.

Chuck is doing a nice job this week, ... Roy's looking better. He probably got 40-50 percent of the snaps today.

It'll be a good crowd. It'll be a national TV audience. It's a game where we're playing our guys longer.

I'll answer that. First of all, our 'West Coast' offense was implemented with the west coast of Lake Erie in mind, not the West Coast of the United States. Ours is just not as explosive. In the real West Coast Offense, you think of Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Bill Walsh. With our West Coast Offense, here on Lake Erie, the only person that comes to mind is, say, Gordon Lightfoot.

It would have been a heck of a way to finish that game. For a minute or two, we were feeling pretty good about that game. In my mind, I still think it was a catch. It is water over the dam but I thought Marcus had possession with his hands before he slid out of bounds.

We're taking a look, if we choose to add another quarterback. We want to take a good look at him and see how he learns our offense -- if he's a candidate to bring back at another time. We've seen him play on film in a very exciting offense. He's been productive.

The real shame of the preseason, ... is that you start the summer fresh. Guys are in the best shape they'll be in all year. Then you go out and get banged up. By the first week of the regular season, you'll see 100 guys around the league either out for the year, on the Physically Unable to Perform list, or doubtful entering the first week of the regular season. It's awful.

Next week's a game for the lead. We're right in the thick of that. I said many times, this thing is going right down to January.

I remember when we brought that kid in before the draft. I saw he scored twice. Man.

I was trying to shift the receivers around, and I asked Roy if he could play the Z (flanker) position for the rest of the game, ... He said he didn't think his leg was up to that. I had to base things a lot on his decision. I can't feel how much his leg hurts.

Boy, they came out to practice today. I thought today's practice was really good. Good energy.

We'll decide how we're going to play these receivers. If you're hurt or if you're a little thin, then obviously you alter the game plan.

Mike felt he didn't have control. That was the word 'control' that kept coming up in our conversation. He felt he needed to have control before sliding out of bounds.

He talked to his wife about doing this. His family's back home without dad, right now and they're good with it, because he wants to pursue coaching as a career and we love having him here.

I hope he's healthy enough to take the starter's reps in practice.

There's no way running on a beach or at some high school playground that you're going to get in football shape like you do when you practice.

We didn't have him kick any footballs, ... He felt better each day, but ... it was the wise thing to do to keep him out.

We haven't made any decisions to do anything differently today. These are down-the-road things, just to know who is available.

We know who is out there as far as available quarterbacks, but in reality, no one would be more prepared or capable as a No. 2 at this point than Dan. He got more snaps in the preseason than any of our quarterbacks and continues to get better.

That's the same in college. It's the same in high school. Kids are getting bigger, stronger, faster, more into the weightlifting, more into nutrition, more into size.

We've got to capitalize on those takeaways. We've got to be able to score points, obviously. We ran the ball better. I didn't think we threw the ball well. The passing game was a little bit out of sync until the last drive. That's got to improve.

Pretty darn. He was a busy guy. He was right on course to being a heck of a football player.

This is the best news we could have received. He called right after he got the results. Jeff was very upbeat and said he hopes to be ready sooner.

I thought yesterday's (Monday's) afternoon practice wasn't up to par. Today's practice was very lively. We need that. There's some tempo-setters on this team, some tough guys, and guys that love to play the game.

Whoever is playing quarterback for is going to be still playing with the same supporting cast that is available to us this week. There's not going to be any miracle solution to this.

Some of us wore those blue masks ... like you're having a baby. It was kinda crazy in here.

How it feels, ... he'll learn that as he starts getting hit.

We'll make some noise, ... Whatever we have to work with we try to make the best of, and that's what we do as coaches. No matter whom I'm working with, that's our job, and I do feel we have better players now than we did several years ago.

I've said this many times. I really like our quarterback situation. I really like it. Joey is better. Jeff's a capable guy. Our third guy (Orlovsky) is really coming on. We've got some guys that are able to play and able to win -- much more ready to do this than before.

We were a sick team at the start of it, and then I thought we became a banged-up team as well, ... A third of the team is feeling like it should be in bed. We need a bye right now. It was a long preseason. And now we're a little banged up on top of that. I just need to get these guys a break.

Other than that pad he wears on his leg, ... I don't see any difference from training camp.

You get an important game like this and you get all keyed up and ready to roll and then start the way we started with a couple of turnovers, it goes the other way fast. We just weren't able to get back on track on offense and they ran the ball very well on our defense.

Nothing has changed. He's just getting a little bit better each day. Decisions will be made late in the week. We're just giving him every opportunity to freshen up.

That's not the first time he's been on the ground. But that was the one that scared me the most. A little scary but good.

I thought we'd run the ball better and stop the run better than we did today. It snowballed away from us early.

He was advised not to fly out there because when your jaw's wired, if you hit a little turbulence and throw up, it's not a good thing, ... So he flew anyway and he did the toast with an interpreter. It was good stuff.

You go through some ups and downs, ... He's developed some thick skin, which is necessary at that position. Joey's a fighter and he keeps working at it. He's going to improve when his supporting cast improves.

I had to get him off the field today. There was no way I could keep playing him, because if he got a twisted ankle or something, now we're really looking for quarterbacks.

We talk all the time, ... But the discussions have gone, 'Do what you've got to do. Make the call.'.

He likes that. He feels he's capable of doing that.

This is a good win and a good response to our last loss.

We had x-rays taken of Jeff's leg after the game, and they were negative, but he's very sore. We'll see what he can do this week and then make a decision.

Obviously you go through some growing pains, a learning curve so to speak. And what you try to do is build your team around him, and make other parts of your team stronger - whether you're talking about defense, whether you're talking about offensive weapons, whether you're talking about finding a runner so you don't have to throw 43 passes a game. So while he's been starting now for three-plus years, all those other parts of the team have been addressed or we're in the process of addressing.
